Vasco Da Gama Led 4 ships around Cape of Good Hope in 1497, later reached Calicut. Sold profit of prices 3,000%. Lost many sailors due to sickness. Forced treaty on CAlicut leader, set up major trade empire for portugal.
Christopher Columbus Italian navigator from port of Genoa. Wanted to reach Indies by sailing west. Portugal turned him down, sailed for spain. Ran into carribean thinking it was the indies.
Two great errors of Columbus: Underestimated size of earth, no idea that two continents laid in his path.
Vasco Nunez de Balboa Spanish explorer. Hacked passage through rain forrests on Panama. Discovered South Sea.
Ferdinand Magellan Portugese Noble, set out from Spain with five ships. Put down mutinies. Reached coast of S.America, trying to find path to pacific. It enter southern tip of SA, extreme weather, Reached philiipeans, was killed, ships 1st circumnavigation. awesome!

King Suryavarman built the great temple complex at Angkor Wart. Extremely impressive. Portrays gods and glorifies the king. Shows images of Buddha, Shiva, and Vishnu.

Alfonso de Albuqeurque conquested, showed evil side of portugese. crushed arab fleets. set up strong trading posts. They did not have enough resources to conquer land though.

Matteo Ricci jesuit, made positive impression on Ming China. Failed at spreading Christianisty, but china was excited to learn the arts or the renaissance. Learned Chinese and adopted the dress.
Manchus seized beijing. Set up Qinh dynasty. Barred intermarriage between chinese and Manchus. Adopted confuscian system of goverment.
Kangxi ruled in Qing from 1661-1722. Extended Chinese power to central Asia.
Qianlong ranged 1736-1792. Expanded bordes to make the largest empire in the nation's history. Retired after 60 years, did not want to ruler greater than his Grandfather (Kangxi)
Hermit Kingdom name given to Korea. Would kill sailors who washed up on shore.
Francis Xavier Jesuit Spanish Priest, contributed to the spread of christianity in Japan.
Srivijaya empire in Indonesia that flourished from 600-1200. Controlled the Strait of Malaca. Worshiped spirit forms of nature.
