HInduism Major Religion of India Today. Supreme Being: underlies all reality. Many Gods: Vishnu (creator) and Shiva (destroyer) most important. Reincarnation: endless cycle of birth and rebirth. Karma: a person's behavior determines one's next life.
Buddhism Major religion in China, Japan and S.E. Asia. Based on teacher, Siddartha Gautama (known as Buddha) a prince who left riches behind to search for Enlightenment.
Buddhist Beliefs Meditation and Self Denial: all suffering is caused by excess desire. Eightfold Path: following this way of life, a person eventually achieves nirvana. Nirvana: a state of perfection and perpetual bliss.
Christianity Major religion of Europe and Americas. Jesus: belief that Jesus was the son of God and died to save humanity from its sins. Conduct: emphasis on love, forgiveness, respect for human life.
New Testament The Christian addition to the Hebrew Bible. Holy book. Major Strands: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, various Protestant sects.
Confucianism Major belief system of China, based on teachings of Confucius (551-497 B.C. Virtue: Each person should cultivate individual virtue through learning, kindness and humility. Hierarchy: Each person has their specific role and responsibilities to others.
Mandate of Heaven Chinese belief, part of the Dynastic Cycle. Good rulers have the right to rule as long as they benefit their subjects.
Greek City States Each City State had its own form of government and system of laws. Due to Mountainous geography of Greece.
Sparat totalitarian organization based on military needs, discipline.
Athens First democracy. Citizens voted on issues of the day. Citizenship limited.
Golden Age of Athens Art, architecture, philosophy, drama, mathematics and science flourished during Athen's Global Age. (Pericles, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle)
Ancient Rome Republic that became an empire, conquered the Mediterranean world and much of Europe. Romans adopted greek culture and learning.

Code of Justinian Codification of Roman Law, served as the basis of law in Europe for much of history.
Pax Romana 200 years of Roman Peace starting at the time of Augustus Caesar.
Roman Architecture Roads, domed structures, aqueducts stadiums built throughout the empre.
