Ancient Greece

What is the Peloponnesus? The southern part of Greece.
Who first settled Greece? The Mycenaeans were the first tribe to settle Greece around 2000 BC/BCE.
Who wrote about the Trojan War in the epic poem, the Iliad? Homer
What is the other famous epic poem that Homer wrote? The Odyssey
Where did the Ancient Greeks believe the gods and goddesses lived? On Mt. Olympus
What caused the City-States to form in Ancient Greece? The geography of the land. People were separated.
What two city-states fought each other in the Peloponnesian War? Who won? Athens and Sparta fought each other, Sparta won.
Describe the city state of Sparta. Sparta was focused on war and fighting. Education included learning how to fight.
Describe the city-state of Athens. Athens was focused on the arts, education, and architecture. Many great scholars studied at schools in Athens. Boys learned philosophy, history, geometry, the sciences, music and poetry among other things.
Who conquered Greece in 338 BC/BCE? Alexander the Great
Who conquered Greece after Alexander the Great? The Romans in 31 BC/BCE
What did Alexander the Great do? He conquered most of the known world by the time he was 30! Alexander founded the city of Alexandria, Egypt and created the world's first library there.
What is an agora? A public meeting place. Here men talk and trade at the market.
What is a craftsman? Someone who makes things to sell. A merchant, on the other hand just barters and trades goods that others make.
Who makes the decisions in the family, such as who the children will marry when they grow up? The father (men).
What did wealthy men do in their free time? Men would go to the gymnasium to exercise and relax.
What types of jobs would wealthy women do? They would oversee the slaves, organize parties, weave cloth and run the household.
What would poor women do for work? They would have to do all the work themselves, cook, clean, care for the young, weave cloth, etc.
What type of work would poor men do? Many men were fishermen or worked harvesting grapes or olives. There was little farming in Greece so other men were craftsmen.
What type of clothes did men and women wear? They wore a loose robe called a chiton and a long rectangular piece over it called a himation.
What material were clothes made out of? Clothes were mostly made of sheep wool or sometimes Egyptian cotton or linen if you could afford it.
Name some foods Greeks ate. Greeks ate bread, wine, fruit, deer, fish, rabbit, olives, and dates.
What is a symposia? Gatherings where men discussed philosophy and politics (government). Women were not allowed to be part of the talking.
What are the two types of plays the Greeks had? Comedies (funny) and tragedies (sad) plays
Who was Sophocles? The best play write for the sad or tragic plays.
Who was Aristophanes? The best play write for the funny plays or the comedies.
What is a myth? A genre of literature that uses stories about the gods to explain why we have what we have today.
Who was Aesop? A Greek slave who earned his freedom because of the good fables he told.
What is sculpture? Statues made out of materials such as marble which look life like.
What type of government did the city state of Athens have? A democracy, where citizens could vote on laws.
What type of government did most city-states in Greece have? A totalitarian government where the city-state is ruled by a king.
What did Aristarchus believe? That the earth revolved around the sun. Everyone else thought the sun revolved around the earth!
What did Hippocrates do that was important? He taught people that it wasn't the gods that made you sick. You could be healthy if you were clean and exercised and ate well.
Who is the "Father of Medicine"? Hippocrates
Who began the "Hippocratic Oath" that doctors still use today? Hippocrates
Who is the "Father of History"? Hetodotus
Why were the Olympics begun in the year 776 BC/BCE? They were games created to honor the god Zeus. They were held every 4 years in Olympus.
Who was Socrates? He was a philosopher and teacher in Ancient Greece. He taught his students to think and question the world around them.
Who was Plato? He was a student of Socrates. He was a philosopher and teacher as well. He wrote a famous dialogue called the "Republic"
Did Plato believe that a Democratic government was good? Yes
What is philosophy? The study of thought.
Did the Egyptians have a social class system? Yes the Egyptians did have a social class system.
What is a chiton and a himation? A chiton was a robe like garment worn by greeks. A himation was a rectangular shaped coloring material that goes over the robe.
