What two things were the Mongols known for? Their skill on horseback and ability to wage war.
Who were the Mongols? The Mongols were nomadic herders.
Where did the Mongols live? They lived in N of China in Mongolia.
How did the Mongols (formation of people) live? in tribes
Why were they nomads. They were herders who grazed their animals on the steppes.
What are steppes? Grassy rolling wide plains
What year did the Mongol leaders meet in what desert? 1206 and Gobi Desert
What happened in 1206 in the Gobi Desert? Temujin was elected Ghengis Khan.
What does Ghengis Khan mean? Strong Ruler
What was well known about his army? They used terror to conquer vast lands.
Army? 100,000 warriors, well trained groups, chosen for abilities
What is terror? Violent actions that are meant to scare people into srrendering.
How did the Mongols rule? Eventually peaceful, encouraging trade. They also respected conquered cultures and sometimes adopted cultures.
What did the Mongols learn from the Chinese? Gunpowder, fire lance made them more frightening in battle.
How was Ghengis Khan's empire divided when he died? Between his four sons.
Who was Kublai Khan? Ghengis khan's grandson and ruler who continued to conquest
Where did Kublai Khan move the capital to and from? Karakorum to Khanbaliq in China (Beijing)
What does Yuan mean? beginning
What did the Mongols do in China? Mongols had top gov't jobs Chinese kept gov't jobs Mongols were rulers but did not mix with chinese
How did the Mongols feel about religion? They were Buddhists but tolerant of other religions.
Who was marco polo? A famous European traveler from Italy.
What does ming mean? Brilliant
Why did the Mongol power decline? Weak leaders, Mongolian groups broke away, Chinese wanted own dynasty
How did the ming dynasty begin? Zhu Yuanzhang started rebellion and became emperor
Where was the ming capital? Nanjing
What does Zhu's Alternate name mean? Hong Wu=Military Emporer
How did Hong Wu rule? Cruelly- killed people suspected of treason
What is treason? Disloyalty to the gov't
Who became emporer after Hong Wu Died? Yong Le, his son
How did Yong Le rule? He was powerful and reformed China
What was the Imperial and Forbidden City? Imperial= gov't city with palaces and gov't hq Forbidden= limited home to emporers with beautiful gardens where emporer and court lived
What did civil service exams do? They ensured qualified people for jobs in gov't
What is a census? Count of people
What did they do? Collect taxes accurately
What happened to the Chinese economy? Grew and expanded
What happened to agriculture Thrived and grew more crops for trading
What kind of cloth did the chinese wear Cotton
What were novels? Long fictional stories
Why did Zheng He send out voyages? to show power, explore, and demand tribute
Who led the journeys? Zheng He
