What discovery did Wegener make that supported the theory of Continental Drift? Identical fossils were found on the coasts of South America and Africa
What is the theory of Continental Drift? The theory that the continents can move apart from each other and have done so in the past
What is tectonics? The study of the movement and changes in the Earth's crust
What is plate tectonics? The lithosphere (crust) is divided into plates that float and move on the athenosphere (upper mantle)
What is a convection current? The flow of hot fluid in a circular pattern
What is a plate boundary? The point at which two plates touch each other
What is a trench? A deep underwater valley
What is stress? A force that causes the Earth's crust to change shape and/or volume
Which type of boundary is the place where two plates meet and push together? Convergent boundary
Which type of boundary is the place where two plates pull apart? Divergent boundary
Which type of boundary is the place where two plates slide past each other horizontally? Transform boundary
Which type of boundary has compressional stress? Convergent boundary
Which type of boundary has tensional stress? Divergent boundary
Which type of boundary has shearing stress? Transform boundary
