Ethics

QuestionAnswer
What is conformity? The act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to that of the social group
What is ecological validity? The extend to which materials and setting match the real-life situation under investigation
Impact of Milgram's work There was a paradigm shift within personality psychology. Inspired new lines of research and shift to real-life situations within social psych. And ethical issues arose concerning psychological distress, use of deception and lack of informed consent.
What is the Institutional Review Board (IRB)? A committee that has been formally designated to approve, monitor, and review research involving humans with the aim to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects
How is deception typically used in research? By the use of cover stories and confederates
Explain experimental realism The degree to which an experiment absorbs and involves its participants
Explain mundane realism The degree to which an experiment is only superficially similar to everyday situations
What are conceal demand characteristics? Cues in an experiment that tell the participant what behavior is expected
What is informed consent? Providing enough information about the study that enables the participants to choose whether or not they wish to participate
Describe debriefing Providing full disclosure about the nature of the research at conclusion of study session
Explain the price of IRB It is a complicated, painful process. Yields fewer high impact studies, resulted in a loss of information to the field of psychology, and reasoned balance.
