Phillip II (1527-1598) King of Spain from 1556-1598. He led Roman Catholic efforts to recover parts of Europe from Protestantism.
James I First Stuart ruler of England-wanted to rule as an absolute monarch-clashed with Parliament
Charles I (1600-149) English king tried and beheaded for disobeying English law, ending the English Civil War
Charles II (1630-1685) King of England-asked by Parliament to rule after the death of Oliver Cromwell
James II King of England. He fled to France and was replaced by William & Mary in the Glorious Revolution.
Peter the Great (1672-1725) Czar (ruler) of Russia from 1682-1725. He was an absolute ruler who westernized and reformed Russia.
Louis XIV (1638-1715) King of France from 1643-1715. Known as the Sun King-built palace at Versailles-absolute ruler
Sulieman (1495-1566) Ruled the Ottoman Empire from 1520-1566. He expanded the empire.
Akbar (1542-1605) Mughal ruler of India; enlarged his empire to include most of northern India
