Amniocentesis Procedure where a needle is inserted into the amniotic sac to withdrawl amniotic fluid for testing;used to ID genetic abnormalities,often neutral tube deficits and Down Syndrome in the fetus;also used to determine the sex of the feturs
Cervix Entrance to the uterus
Colostrum Fluid secreted by the breasts after delivery,before milk production,that contains antibodies and provides the infant with immunological protection
Effacement Thinning of the cervix during the labor process
Embryo Initial physical stage of human development following fertilization of the ovum until the end of the 7th or 8th week
Endometrium Lining of the uterus
Fetus Human child in utero from embryonic stage until birth
Funal Height Height of the fundus from the top of the symphysis pubis to the highest point at the top of the uterus; used to estimate the size of the fetus
Gravida Combining form meaning a pregnant female or pregnancy
Gynecology A Branch of Medicine pertaining to the female reproductive system, disease and disorders
Gynecologist Physician specializing in the medical care of the female reproductive system, disease and disorders.
Menarche onset of menses or menstrual cycle during adolescence
Menopause Cessation of menses
Obstetrician Physician specializalizing in the medical care of women during pregnancy, including prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care
Obstetrics A Branch of medicine pertaining to the medical care of woman during pregnancy, including prenatal delivery, and postnatal care.
Ovum (Plural - Ova) Human Gamete (egg)
Pap Smear (Papanicolaou Test) A screening test to aid in the detection of cervical/uterine cancer and cancer precursors
Para Combining form signifying the number of deliveries after the 20th week of gestation
Perineum Area between the vaginal orfice and the anus
Postnatal/Postpartum After Childbirth
Prenatal Prior to birth
Zygote The fertilized ovum created by the union of the male and female sex cells (sperm and ovum)

BSE Breast Self Exam
C-Section Cesarean Section
EDC Estimated date of confinement
EDD Expected date of delivery
FHT Fetal Heart Tones
G Gravida (followed by number of each pregnancy experienced)
L & D Labor and Delivery
LH Lutenizing Hormone
LMP Last Menstrual Peroid
OB/GYN Obstetrics and Gynecology
PMS Premenstrual Syndrome
PP Postpartum
P Para (Followed by number of each birth of a fetus over 20 weeks gestation)
UCG Urine Chorionic Gonadotropin
