Liberation Gaining equal rights or full social or economic opportunities for a particular group. Most African nations achieved this after WWII
Nationalists People who led the protests against colonial rule in Africa after WWII
Kikuyu Tribe of Kenyan farmers whose land was taken away by the British. Led a terrorist movement against British rule
Mau Mau Nickname used by the British for guerilla fighters in Kenya
One-party System Government structure in which a single pollitical party controlled the government. Many early African leaders used this to prevent disunity, but many became dictators.
Mixed Economy Having both state-run and private enterprises that provide goods and services
Drought A long period of dry weather that damages crops. Many areas of Africa face this problem almost constantly
Urbanization Movement of people from rural areas to cities. Many parts of Africa experienced this rapidly in the 20th century
Revival A new acceptance or interest in past customs. North Africa saw a widespread return to Islamic beliefs in the 20th century
Ethnic group People who share a common and distinctive culture, religion, language, or the like
Afrikaners White residents of South Africa who descended from the orginial Dutch settlers. Made up less than 20% of the population but controlled almost all wealth into the 1980's
Apartheid The separation of races by law. This system was introduced to South Africa in 1948 and ended in 1989
