Musical Terms

Harmony The simultaneous events of music.
Dissonance Unstable harmony; Sounding against.
Consonance Resolution of unstable harmony; Sounding with or complementing.
Drone Sustained sounding of one or several tones for harmony support.
Texture Interweaving of melodic lines with harmony.
Monophony Single voice music with no accompaniment.
Heterophony Multiple voices elaborating one melody.
Polyphony Many voice music or texture; Two or more melodic lines combined into a multivoiced texture.
Homophony One voice with accompaniment.
Imitation Melodic idea presented in one voice and then restated in another, each part continuing as others enter.
