What is Queue? Qing hairstyle; dictated for men; was considered, "lose your hair or lose your head"
What are banners? Separate military leaders; became chief Qing fighting force
What is a clan? Hundred of related families; linked by a clan council of elders; variety of common social & religious beliefs
What is The Golden Lotus? First realistic social novel during the late Ming period; depicts corrupt life of a wealthy landlord; manipulates those around for sex, money, & power
What is The Dream of the Red Chamber? Most distinguished popular novel; published in 1791; tragic love between 2 young people
What is Tokugawa? He completed its restoration for central Japanese authority; rise of popular literature written by & for townspeople
What is Ronin? Warriors without masters; 1 of 3 warrior classes composed of the shogun; other 2 were Daimyo & Samurai
What is Kabuki? Form of entertainment; emphasized action, music, & dramatic gestures; early kabuki dramas dealt with the world of teahouses & dance halls in the cities
What is Yi? Korean Dynasty; remained in power during the entire Tokugawa era in Japan; was named after yi-song-gye
What is Yong Le? initiated construction of the imperial city in beijing; he moved the capitol from nanjing to beijing in 1421; died in 1424
What is the Ming Dynasty? Overthrow of the dynasty allowed the Manchus to seize power; also established the Qing dynasty
What is Qianlong? Showed first signs of internal decay; during Qing dynasty
What is footbinding? Only for women in China; status symbol in Qing society; restricted the mobility of women
Who is Cao Xueqin? Chinese author; Wrote The Dream of the Red Chamber; generally considered to be China's most distinguished popular novel
What is Daimyo? Name for head of the noble families; controlled their own lands and warred with their neighbors
Who is Toyotomi Hideyoshi? Persuaded most of Daimyo to accept his authority in 1590; a farmer's son who had become a military commander; located his capitol at Osaka
Who is Matsuo Basho? One of the greatest of all Japanese poets; lived from 1644 to 1694; one of the chief literary figures in Tokugawa, Japan
What happened in Korea? Japanese pottery makers borrowed technicians from here; used to make handsome ceramic pieces
What is the "Hermit Kingdom"? Earned the name from the rulers; tried to keep it isolated from the rest of the world
What bladed weapons does the samurai carry? Naginata and Katana
What does the passage mean by stating that Emperor Kangxi punishes offenders "with marvelous impartially"? He punishes all the same without consideration of the offenders' class
How does the author of this passage view peasants? With condescension
What was the Shogunate capitol? Edo
Why do you think the Tokaido Road was important to the shogun? It bounded the region together
