What is social psychology? the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behavior and thoughts in social situations
What do social psychologists focus on? understanding how and why individuals behave, think, feel as they do in social situations involving the actual or imagined presence of other people
Why is social psychology scientific in nature? Accuracy, objectivity, skepticism, open-mindedness
What are the different factors/conditions that influence social behavior? social interactions, cognitive processes, environment, culture, biology
What are the current trends in social psychology? cognition and behavior, social neuroscience, role of implicit processes, taking full account of diversity, critical social psychology
Cognition and Behavior Trend? we cannot understand why and how people behave in certain ways in social situations without considering their thoughts, memory, intentions, emotions, attitudes and beliefs
Social Neuroscience Trend?  Area of research that seeks knowledge about the neural and biological bases of social processes
Social Neuroscience Prejudice example? o High warmth-high competence: own group (pride) o High warmth-low competence: disabled, elderly (envy) o Low warmth-high competence: rich (pity) o Low warmth-low competence: homeless, drug addicts (disgust)
Role of Implicit processes trend?  Our thoughts and actions are shaped by factors which we are unaware of and often take place in an automatic manner
Role of Implicit Process research example? tested 3 mo babies to look at photos of their own race and another race and record time
Taking full account of diversity trend?  Sensitive to the fact that an individual’s culture, ethnic, and racial heritage often play a key role in social behavior
Multicultural perspective on diversity? research findings obtained from one culture do not necessarily generalize to other cultures
Critical social psychology trend?  Taking reflexivity and multiple perspectives as important aspects of the research process; linking research and action
How do social psychologists answer the questions they raise? Systematic development and testing of a theory about human behavior & mental events;Disciplined inquiry into human thinking, feeling, and behavior
Goals of social psychologist when raising questions? describe, explain, predict, control
Scientific Method? role of theory, methodology, ethics; systematically acquire knowledge and understanding about behavior
Undertaking of psychology? develop suppositions about behavior and determine which of those suppositions are accurate
Scientific Method Step 1? Select topic and identify questions
SM Step 2? Formulate an explanation
SM step 3? Carry out research
Experimental research? controlled test of a hypothesis in which the researcher manipulates (changes) one variable to discover the effect on another

External validity? can the findings be generalized to real-life social situations and to other people?
