Samuel Slater In 1790, built the first spinning mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. (textile mill)
Industrial Revolution Era where factory machines replaced hand tools, and large-scale manufacturing replaced farming as the main form of work.
Factory System Brought many workers and machines together under one roof. People left farms to go to crowded cities to work at factories
Lowell Mills Textile mills built in a village made by Francis Cabot Lowell. Employed farm girls to work. High wages
Interchangeable Parts Parts that were exactly alike that could be used for easier assembly of an object and easy repair
Robert Fulton Invented a steamboat that could move against the current or a strong wind. Not powerful enough to move upriver.
Samuel F. B. Morse Invented the telegraph. Sends long and short pulses of electricity along a wire that would be translated into a message.
Eli Whitney Invented cotton gin and interchangeable parts on a gun.
Cotton Gin Used to clean cotton and made it far more effiecient. Workers could now clean up to 50 pounds of cotton a day.
Spirituals Religious folk songs. Slaves expressed their religious beliefs in these.
Nat Turner Led slave rebellion in 1831 in Virginia. He and 70 followers killed 55 white people.
Nationalism The feeling of pride, loyalty, and protectiveness towards your country
Henry Clay Strong nationalish from Kentucky. Promoted the American System.
American System Plan for making U.S. economically self-sufficient. Establish a protective tariff, Establish a national bank, Improve the country's transportation systems.
Erie Canal Created a water route between New York City and Buffalo, New York. Opened upper Ohio Valley Great Lake region to settlement and trade.
James Monroe Won presidency or 1816 by large majority. Federalist party liked him and soon disappeared.
Sectionalism Loyalty to the interests of your own region or section of the country, rather than to the nation as a whole.
Missouri Compromise Kept the balance of power in the Senate between the slave states and free states. Also called for slavery to be banned from the Louisiana Territory north of the parallel 36 30.
Monroe Doctorine Americans were closed to further colonization. Warned that European efforts to reestablish colonies would be considered "dangerous to our peace and safety." Promised that U.S. would stay out of European Affairs.
