Constitution blue print for how the government will run
fundamental principles laws that are not in the Constitution
7 principles of the Constitution popular sovereignty, republicanism, federalism, separation of power, limited government, checks and balances, individual rights
popular sovereignty people rule: elections of representatives, everyone included in the vote
federalism share power between states and federal government
separation of power executive, legislative, and judicial: creates groups (branches) that will have competing powers in government
executive branch President, enforces laws
legislative branch Congress (House of Representatives and Senate): makes laws
judicial branch court system including Supreme Court: interpret the laws
limited government only has power of the Constitution and no other power. People don't want one person to have too much power so powers are split up. Power is given to people because they vote.
checks and balances Congress passes laws but the President can veto.
individual rights First 10 Amendments: power that is given to the people, something that the people are allowed to do and can not be taken away.
reasons for Constitution make it fair , no one person has too much power, fear
first fear Government has power to endanger people, enslave people, ruin people's lives, control people
second fear government officials will become powerful and take over
third fear Government has so much power, it can make unfair laws
fourth fear even if you separate the powers, one branch of government could take over
fifth fear federal government will have too much power and the individual states will cease to exist
sixth fear government can make and enforce laws that would take away rights that people shouldn't have taken away
seventh fear people would lose right to vote and the majority would no longer rule.
