Alternative and Assistive Communication

AAC -the supplementation or replacement of natural speech using aided/unaided symbols -the field of area of clinical practice to improve the communication skills of individuals with low functional speech
What does AAC consist of? -all forms of communication other than oral -facial expressions, gestures, symbols, pictures, write
Goal -generally to achieve the most effective communication possible for the person -Aspects of this field include clinical service delivery, education and research.
Aided no tech AAC -Does NOT use any power source -ex. book with symbols, board
Unaided AAC systems -pointing -facial expressions -sign language -eye gaze -gestures
Aided low tech AAC -uses some sort of power source -ex. simple switches, step-by-step -button to speak for you
Aided High Tech AAC -require a power source, more advanced -ex. DynaVox -synthetic speech output -allow ppl to have conversations -easily programmed and accessible for client
Which one to use? DEPENDS ON: -physical abilities: speech, respiratory, phonation, motor function -mental/cognitive functioning -Environment they are in
Visual Pictorial systems -large photos of actual objects -smaller actual photos -colored pics -black and white pics -symbols -written words w/ pics
Who Uses AAC? PEOPLE WITH: -limited physical control(CP, paralysis, hemiplegia, degenerative) -Hearing impairment -Specific Language disorder -Learning disability(downs) -Autism -temporary impairments
Who is responsible for providing AAC services? -SLP -OT -PT -Parent -MD -psychologist
How much do they cost? -depends on the system -unaided are inexpensive -aided is from 1.00-20,000 bucks
What other equipment is involved? -high tech=protective case, mounts, speakers -Low tech= none -switches/eye scan to activate -usually cost is covered w/ submission for approval
Who will pay? -Medicaid -Medicare -Private Insurance -School District -Client/family
Where are AAC devices utilized? -any setting for a client -public or private
How to decide which device is best? -client's needs and abilities -the multi-disciplinary team -trial of device before purchase
Who writes the funding report? -OT or SLP
How long is the Process? -depends on client/situation -week to months -ensure well written reports
