What did immigrants travel in and what were the conditions like? Steerage = under ship's deck, where steering was controlled Hot, smelly, cramped
What did passengers on boats suffer from? Diseases + seasickness
What were immigration centers? Who ran them? Government run centers where officials decided which immigrants could enter the US
Which immigrants faced possible rejection at immigrant centers? People who had legal problems and diseases
What was Ellis Island? Busiest immigration center for European immg., located in NY Harbor, East Coast
What was Angel Island? busy immigration center for Chinese immg, located in San Francisco
What was one restriction for immigrants at Angel Island? What did it often lead to? Only people with fathers who were US Citizens were allowed, led to month long investigations
What was El Paso, Texas? major center for Mexican immigrants
What jobs did many Mexican immigrants take once in the US and where? Contruction, miners, farmers, in Southwestern states
What were the main things immigrants had to find/adapt to once in America? Homes, jobs, languages, customs
What did many immigrants do in neighborhoods? Why? Set up neighborhoods with immg from same country, so they could keep their same customs and languages
What were some of the places/things immigrants set up for education and recreation? Schools, clubs, places of worship, newspapers
What did a group of Jews found? Yiddish theater (language they spoke)
What did immigrants start on their own for income? Give one example. Shops and banks Ex. Italian immigrant Amadeo Giannini founded Bank of Italy, San Francisco
What did business owners offer to new immigrants? Loans/credit
What were benevolent societies? organizations set up by immigrant communities that helped immigrants with sickness + unemployment + death
Where did many immigrants have to live because of their situation? Tenements = overcrowded apartment buildings
Who were the fastest of immigrants to learn American customs? Children
