What is the Fertile Crescent? Where is it? -large area of rich/fertile land; arc shaped -stretches from Mediterranean Sea- Persian Golf
What is Mesopotamia? What does this refer to and who named it Mesopotamia? -region in modern day Iraq; between Tigris and Euphrates Rivers - "Meso"-middle, "Potamia"-Rivers -no ancient name, named by Greeks years later
Why is this area fertile? - between 2 rivers; floods washed up nutrients(silt) on to the soil
What is division of labor? -special in 1 job -used by Sumerians to divide jobs and society order
What is Cuneiform? How was it used? How did it start out? -first writing system -Symbol- syllable - early form in pictographs - recorded buisness records and royal affairs - -used stylus; wrote on clay
What is a scribe? List details of the job. -hired to make written accounts of items that people traded -way to move up in the social class -writer
The Plow (Sumerians) -pulled by oxen -breaks through hard clay soil -increased farm production
The Sun-Dial (the new Babylonians or the Chaldeans) -measures time by the position of the Sun
The wheel (Sumerians) -wheeled vehicles ( such as the wagon and the cart) -potters wheel
Siege warfare (Assyrians) - attack over and over again
Battering Rams -used to break open doors -pool would jam against the wall
Movable Towers(Assyrians) -used in battle
Hanging Gardens of Babylon(Chaldeans) -Nebuchadnezzar -own irrigation system -in grand palace - from ground looked like plants were hanging -on roof
Chariot(Hittites) -ancient horse drawn vehicle -two wheeled
What did the Sumerians contribute to mathematics? -developed math system based on 60 -calculated areas of triangles and rectangles
What are Ziggurats? Where were they located( in the city-state)? Why were they so tall? -located in center of city state -temples -tall because Mesopotamia's thought that they could link to the heavens and they were important
Which ruler created the "Hanging Gardens Of Babylon"? What were they? -Nebuchadnezzar -own irrigation system -in palace -if you looked up, looked like the plants were hanging
What is the difference between polytheism and monotheism? -polytheism is the worship of many Gods -monotheism is the worship of one God
What is an empire? How is it different than a city-state? -empire is the collection of many land controlled by 1 owner -city-state is an independent city and surrounding land
Which empire was known more for its trade than winning battles? -Phoenicians -also known for creating alphabet
Why was the purple die made by the Phoenicians so expensive( and used to show wealth)? -took 10,000 mollusks to create 1 gram of purple die
What was the Code of Hammurabi? Who created it? How many laws were there? Where were they written? What is the significance of these laws to the society? -282 laws -written on a large stone tablet -created by Hammurabi -WAS WRITTEN!!!!!!!
Know the Sumerian social class that made up the social hierarchy. Why is the Sumerian Social Class shaped like a triangle? -King -Priests -Craftspeople, merchants, and traders -Farmers and Laborers -Slaves -shaped like a triangle because the top was rare and the bottom was common
