When was Manifest Destiny? 1830-1860
Where does the term "Manifest Destiny" come from? What does it mean? From an article by John L. O'Sullivan. Manifest- obvious, Destiny- predetermined course of events. It was America's OBVIOUS destiny to take over the entire continent to the Pacific.
Who were the 1st people to populate the far west? mountain men- fur traders
Why did people start to move out west in the 1820s, 30s, 40s? cheap land, better climate, economic depression in east, promise of riches (GOLD/SILVER)
What caused many people to move to California in the late 1840s? the gold rush (forty-niners!)
How did people get out west? Trails paved by mountain men- santa fe trail, oregon trail, california trail, mormon trail
Why did people move all the way to the west coast before settling in the middle? the middle of the continent is the "Great american desert"
Who was the Aroostook War between? Maine and Canada
What did the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 determine? It settled boundary disputes between Maine and Canada and Minnesota and Canada.
Who did Mexico gain their independence from? Spain
Why did the Mexican government want Americans to settle on the land of Texas? They wanted this land to be occupied so that way the Spanish couldn't take it over again. They were, in essence, "house sitting".
Who was the first person to bring 300 families to settle on the land? Stephen Austin (from Missouri to Texas)
Were there more Americans or Mexicans in Texas by 1830? Americans
What 2 major differences existed between the American lifestyle and the Mexican laws? Mexicans had outlawed slavery and they required all immigrants to be Roman Catholic
Who was Presidente of Mexico? Santa Anna
General for the Americans? Sam Houston
What happened at the Alamo? It was a Spanish mission turned into a fort. Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and others were able to hold the Mexicans off just long enough for Sam Houston to get prepared with his army. Everyone at the Alamo died (minus some women and slaves)
What was the final bottle of the Texas Revolution? Battle of San Jacinto (1836). Sam Houston captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty.
What did the treaty between Houston and Santa Anna state? Texas was indepedendent and the border was at the Rio Grande
Why did Van Buren and Jackson avoid having Texas enter the union? THey wanted to avoid the slavery issue.
What countries had claims in Oregon Country? USA, Russia, GREAT Britain, Spain
How did Polk feel about annexation of Oregon and TExas? He was for it!
What does "Fifty-four forty or fight" mean? It was the 54 degrees, 40 minutes mark on the map where Polk wanted the border of Oregon to be
Who annexed Texas? John Tyler
What happened with the Oregon border dispute? Polk backed down on the "fifty-four forty or fight" and settled at the 49th parallel with the British.
Who does Polk send to Mexico to occupy disputed territory with Mexico? Zachary Taylor
WHat was determined in the Treaty of Guardalupe Hidalgo? Mexico recognized Rio Grande as Texas border, US received Mexican cession (present day states), and US pays $15million to mexico
What was the Wilmot Proviso? said that slavery should be forbidden in new territories acquired from Mexico in the war
Gadsden Purchase? purchased portions of Arizon and New Mexico from Mexico by US PResident Franklin Pierce for $10 million
Ostend Manifesto? the agreement the US made with spain to buy Cuba that fell through.
Walker Expedition William Walker (southerner) took over Nicaragua in 1855 but ultimately was defeated and sent back to the US
