Triangular Trade A system in which goods & slaves were tradesd amoung the Americas, England, Africa, West Indies. The Navagation Acts taxed all sugar and molasses that was traded between the West Indiesand the Colonies. One of the first taxes the colonies disagreed with.
Great Awakening A religious movement that swept through the colonies in the 1730-1740's. Jonathan Edwards. George Whitefeild. Made people want more political equality as well as spiritual.
The French and Indian War 1754 French vs English. Battle for land. During 1600-1700's. Wanted Ohio River Valley. War ends with Proclamation Act of 1763 & leaves Britan with major debt.
Proclamation Act(line) of 1763 Native Americans didn't want to give English setllers their land. King George III issued the Proclamation Act of 1763. Banned settlement west of Appalachian Mtns. Shows how England wanted to stop chaos.
Samuel Adams Leader of the secret society; Sons of Liberty. Argued "No taxation without Representation" The Significance is showing how the colonists are fed up with the British & are not afraid to show it.
Boycott Colonists refused to buy Birtish goods that were taxed. Boycott was one of the most effective ways of protest and caused parliment to repeal some taxes.
Stamp Act of 1765 This act required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal, when they bought paper items. The British was trying to make up for the money lost in the FRench & Indian War. First time Britian directly taxed the colonies.
Repeal Repeal means to take away. Parliment repealed some tax laws. Showed Parliment could be affected by the colonies actions. They wanted to avoid conflict if possible.
Townshend Acts 1767 These acts places duties on glass, lead, paints,paper, and tea. To enforce the Townshend Acts British officials used writs of assistance. Shows British didnt care and that they wanted their money.
Boston Massacre 1770 Colonists & Biritsh Soldiers get into an aruement and suddenly it turns into a big deal. Mean names are shouted and Birtish finally shoot. Samuel Adams called the shooting the Boston Massacre.
Boston Tea Party 1773 Dec. 16,1773: Colonists disguised as Native americans run onto three tea filled ships. Dump tons of chests over into the harbor. Showed Colonists werent messing around and that they wanted no more taxes!
Sons of Liberty A secret society created in response to British tax laws; used violence to terrorize tax collectors. They showed that the colonies were unhappy with British tax laws , colonies could organize and were willing to take on the British.
Intolerable Acts 1774 After Boston Tea party, britain furious. Placed Intolerable Acts (coercive acts). Boston Harbor closed, Massachusetts charter cancelled, reelected new governor for MA. Showed Britain was ready for war and was done with the colonies damage.
First Continental Congress 1774 Delegates from 12 colonies gathered in the fall of 1774. Stopped all trade w/ Britain & told militias to prepare for war. Wrote the Olive Branch Petition asked king to restore peace, he rejected. Shows colonies are trying to assemble a government & unite.
Battle of Lexington-Concord1775 First battles of the Revolutionary War. April 18, 700 British soldiers are in Concord in order to destroy the major weapons stored there. Explains how violence is really the only option to restore peace.
Minutemen Members of the militia that had to be ready to fight in a minute. They were the first guys to engage in combat with the British soldiers.
Second Continental Congress 1775 May 1775: delegates from 12 colonies met again in Philadelphia. Didn't break away from England but declared that the Massachusetts militia was the Continental Army. Means they were preparing for war & expecting it.
Battle of Bunker Hill 1775 1st actual battle with the British. Proved that the colonists could take on the British.
Common Sense Written By Thomas Paine, stated how the colonies should break away from Britain. Widely influential in encouraging the Revolutionary War. Best seller.
Thomas Jefferson Declaration of Independence's main author.
Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776 A document that formally announced the colonies break away from England. Unalienable rights(life, liberty, & the pursuit of happiness). Showed colonists strive for independence and that they were willing to fight for freedom.
Patriots Colonists who chose to fight for independence. 40-45% of colonists were Patriots.
Loyalists (a.k.a. tories) Were Colonists who remained loyal to Britain. 20-30% of colonists were loyalists. 50,000 loyalists fled during the revolution.
People "left out" of the Declaration of Independence Abigail Adams(John Adams wife): tried to influence her husband to include women in the declaration. Women were not recognized neither were African Americans. Showed that although colonies for for equality of all, they didn't exactly mean everyone.
Who fought (groups) in the American Revolution Women didn't fight. Africans did and so did all men. This shows how women had fewer rights than most people.
Advantages and Disadvantages of British and Colonial Forces BRITAIN: Profesional army & lots of weapons. But had far distance. People not in war pay taxes & have weakened leadership. COLONIES: More motivation, help from France&Spain, Amazing leadership. But outnumbered. lacked supplies& couldn't pay off war.
Battle of Trenton 1776 George Washington decides to be offense. Patriots attack Hessians (germans on british side) on Christmas night. Important patriot victory. Tables can be turned and British realize this isn't an easy battle.
Battle of Saratoga 1777 British General John Burgoyne was moving south through previously set obstacles. Minutemen swarmed into attack. October 17, Burgoyne surrendered. Best Win for Americans yet. Shows how tables were turned & colonists have a chance.
Battle of Yorktown 1781 Last major battle in the Revolution. Cornwallis sent troops to Yorktown Virginia, mistake. Colonists & French surround them making escape impossible. Oct. 19, 1781 Cornwallis surrenders. What was unimaginable actually happened. Americans are independent!
Treaty of Paris 1783 Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States. Spain gains florida and America spreads past the Appalachians were the Proclamation Act told them not too. The final end of the war, america is independent!
