Great Awakening | Religious movement that swept through the the colonies with preachers like Jonathan Edwards and George Whitfield. Resulted in colonists wanting more political equality. |
French and Indian War 1754 | A war that started between colonists and French over land west of the Mississippi where British won much land and French lost almost all. |
Proclamation Act of 1763 | A law that prevented colonists moving west of the Appalachians for fear of Indian/French confrontation. Made many restless colonists angry. |
Samuel Adams | A colonist who came up with the statement "No Taxation Without Representaion". Founded Commitees of Correspondence which shared ideas of British rule around the towns. |
Boycott | An effective form of protest in which the colonists refused to buy British goods and not pay taxes, British lost money. This form of protest was a way for colonists to get the equality and fairness that they wanted. |
Stamp Act of 1765 | A British tax on all paper products that required colonists to buy a stamp for their paper for proof that they bought the stamp. Angered many colonists and many openly ignored the tax. |
Repeal | To take back a tax or law put on by a government. British repealed many acts because the colonists' pressuring them. |
Townshend Acts 1767 | Taxes placed on lead, paper, paint, and many other products. Made colonists very angry and upset. |
Boston Massacre 1770 | Colonists enraged soldiers by taunting them with snowballs. Soldiers shot and killed 5 colonists. Was used as propaganda against the British and a reason to break away from England. |
Boston Tea Party 1773 | Colonists dressed as Indians, boarded a ship loaded with British tea and dumped all the tea into the harbor and Britain lost a lot of money. Showed colonists anger with the new taxes. |
Sons of Liberty | A group of secret colonists that terrorized tax collectors and opposed British taxes. Showed colonists' first attempt to defy British and showed how upset colonists were. |
Intolerable Acts of 1774 | A series of acts passed by Parliament as a punish for Boston Tea Party. Boston harbor was closed, revoked MA charter, sent British officials accused of crimes to England to face a friendly trial. Thomas Gage become new governor of MA. |
First Continental Congress 1774 | A meeting of colonial delegates that met in Philadelphia to discuss British rule. Some wanted peace and others wanted war but came to a compromise to stop trade and alerted colonies to prepare for war. Began the Revolution that started a powerful nation. |
Battle of Lexington-Concord 1775 | First battle in the Revolutionary War that was fought over a weapons store house. Colonists were defeated easily by the British and battle only lasted for a few minutes. First war between Britain and colonists that exploded into something even bigger. |
Minutemen | Volunteer colonists that had rifles by their side and were ready for a battle at any time. It was the colonists' first attempt at using violence to take a stand against British rule. |

Battle of Bunker Hill | Battle fought between colonists and British were colonists dug a bunker up on a hill. Colonists lost because they had less resources and soldiers, but proved that colonists could put up a good fight against the British. |

Patriots | Colonists who chose to fight for independence. Created a new, powerful nation that showed the world how a monarchy ruins a nation. 40-45% of colonists were Patriots. |
Loyalists | Colonists who remained loyal to Great Britain. 20-30% of colonists were Loyalists. Showed Britain that they still had some support during the war. |
