What was the controversy over Missouri's admittance into the union? Missouri would upset the balance of slave states and free states. There were 11 of each. Missouri would break the tie.
What was the Tallmadge Amendment?` This amendment was added to the bill for Missouri's admission. It called for prohibitions of further introduction of slaves to Missouri. It also emancipated the slaves when they turned 25.

What was the Missouri Compromise? Missouri= slave state Maine= free state slavery prohibited above 36 degrees and permitted below this line.

What does "Jacksonian Democracy" refer to? To the fact that during Jackson's presidency, the common man (Lower and middle classes) became involved in politics.
What are the first 3 reasons that the common man became more involved in politics? 1- universal male suffrage (no property or religious qualifications needed to vote), 2-party nominating conventions (reg voters got to nominate),3-each state choose their own electors (who cast a vote in the electoral college),
what are the 2nd 3 reasons thatt the common man became more involved in politics? 4-the # of elected offices expanded, 5- popular campaigning (with slogans!) 6- spoils system/rotation of officerholders (know what these things are)
What is the spoils system? loyal party members rewarded with jobs for service to party.
What is the rotation of officeholders/ it limited those jackson appointed to one term so other party members could have a term.
How did Andrew Jackson view the role of government? He was a frugal (cheap) Jeffersonian. He opposed big federal spending, opposed an increased national debt. He was a strict constructionist (like Jefferson).
What were the major domestic (issues on American soil) issues of Jackson's presidency? 1- the nullifcation crisis, 2- the trail of tears 3- destruction of the national bank 4- development of the first democratic party
Who was Jackson's Vice President and how did Jackson feel about him? John C. Calhoun was Jackson's Vice President. He was from South Carolina and Jackson hated him for his "nullification theory".
What was the nullification theory? Calhoun said that each state could declare FEDERAL law unconstitutional if it watned to.
What was the Tariff of Abominations? It was the Tariff (tax) of 1828 that was meant to protect northern industry from European competition, but it resulted in higher prices in the South. Southerns gave it this "abominations" name because they hated it. It is the tax that caused the Crisis.
How did Jackson handle the Nullification Crisis? He prepared to invade SC with federal troops and offered to reduce the tarifif. South Carollina did not secede (leave the union) as a result.
What did the Second Bank of hte United States do? It issued its own money and acted as bank for the federal government.

How did Jackson feel about the National bank? He hated it. He sought to destroy it.
Who was in charge of the National Bank? Nicholas Biddle.
How did Jackson end the bank? He funneled the money of the National bank in state "pet banks" and then did not recharter the bank when it expired in 1836.
What are the beliefs of the Whig (Henry Clay/Daniel Webster) party? They wanted a powerful federal government, favored national bank, favored tariffs, they were oftene New Englanders, mid-atlantic(-ers?), and businessmen.
What did the democrats believe in? states rights, limited federal government power, rights of the "common man" (white men), hated national bank, hated tariffs. often southernes, westerners, immgirants.
