Spondylosis Description Degeneration of the spine, and deformity of the intervertebral joints. It is more common in the presence of intervertebral disk degeneration.
Spondylosis Signs and symptoms Signs and symptoms depend on the severity. If nerve impingement exists, pain, paresthesia, numbness and muscle weakness may result.
Spondylosis and Massage Only light massage
Ankylosing Spondylitis Description A chronic, painful, inflammatory arthritis primarily affecting the spine and sacroiliac joints, caused by an autoimmune reaction. It begins with inflammation in the sacroiliac joints and may progress up the spine.
Ankylosing Spondylitis signs and symptoms Chronic low back pain ad stiffness
Ankylosing Spondylitis and Massage Massage is Contraindicated
Osteoarthritis Description A condition in which excessive wear and tear on a joint leads to degeneration of the articular cartilage and bone remodeling.
Osteoarthritis Signs and Symptoms Pain, swelling, redness and heat. In the chronic stage, pain and stiffness are common. The joints most often affected include the knees, hips, and distal interphalangeal joints (DIP joints).
Osteoarthritis and Massage Acute osteoarthritis contraindicates massage. In the chronic stages careful massage and gentle stretching are indicated.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Description A chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease that affects the joints and may also affect extra-articular tissue including the skin, heart, kidneys, blood, vessels, nerves, eyes and bones.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Signs and symptoms Because this is a systemic disease, multiple joints are usually affected and they are affected bilaterally. Clients will also report systematic symptoms, such as fatigue, low grade fever, and aching.
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Massage In the acute stages of the disease massage is contraindicated. During periods of less disease activity massage may help to ease discomfort and improve mobility.
Septic Arthritis Description Septic arthritis refers to inflammation of a joint caused by infection, most often gonorrhea or staphylococcus.
Septic Arthritis Signs and Symptoms It usually affects one joint and is accompanied by high fever . The affected joint is typically red, hot, swollen, and painful.
Septic Arthritis and Massage This is a serious condition that systemically contraindicates massage until the infection has cleared.
