Matter Chapter 2 Vocabulary

Solid Matter that has a definite volume and definite shape.
Energy The ability to cause change.
Element Is any material made up of a single kind of matter. Matter made up of only one kind of atom.
State of Matter Any of the three forms that matter may ordinarily take: solid, liquid, and gas.
Substances A class of matter made up of elements and compounds.
Melting Change of state from a solid to a liquid.
Gas Matter that has no definite volume or shape. It spreads to fill the container.
Boiling The rapid change of state from a liquid to a gas.
Atom The smallest part of an element that still has the properties of that element.
Liquid Matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape. It takes the shape of the container.
Compound Is a kind of matter made up of two or more elements that are joined together.
Evaporation Change of state from a liquid to a gas.
Condensation The change of state from a gas to a liquid.
Chemical Symbol One or two letters that stand from the name of an element.
Chemical Formula A group of symbols that shows the kinds and number of atoms in a single unit of a compound.
Freezing The change of state from a liquid to a solid.
