states of matter, atoms
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is the smallest part of an element? | An atom |
What is the smallest part of a compound? | A molecule. |
What are the three main parts of an atom? | Proton, Neutron, Electron |
What is the positively charged part of an atom? | Proton |
What part of the atom has a negative charge? | Electron |
What part of the atom has neither a positive charge nor negative charge? | Neutron |
What is matter? | anything that has mass and takes up space. All things, living and dead, are made of matter. |
What is an element? | More than one of the SAME or LIKE atom |
What are molecules? | made of two or more atoms, they are the smallest part of a compound. |
What is a compound? | When two or more elements combine to form a new substance. |
What is a mixture? | a combination of two or more substances that do not lose their identifying characteristics when combined. |
What is a solution? | a mixture in which one substance DISSOLVES in another. |
What are the three states of matter? | solid, liquid, gas |
What are the characteristics of a solid? | Have a fixed size, shape, and volume. The particles are packed tightly together (touching) and vibrate back and forth. |
What are the characteristics of a liquid? | Take the shape of their container, have a movable surface, but their volume is fixed. The particles are spread out a little and are able to slide past each other. |
What are the characteristics of a gas? | Take the shape of their surface. The size, shape, and volume changes depending upon the size of the container. The particles are very spread out and move very quickly in all directions. |
What is condensation? | When a gas (such as water vapor) is cooled and becomes a liquid. |
