Age/Era Describes a period of time with similar characteristics; Ex. Age of Exploration
Anthropology Study of humans and their development
Archeology Study of humans and what they leave behind
Aristocracy Government in which the power lies in the hands of a hereditary ruling class
BCE/BC Term used to describe the time before the year zero; Time during this period is counted down to the year zero
Century One hundred years
Command Economy Economic system where the government makes the economic decisions
Cultural Diffusion The spreading of ideas through contact such as trade or war.
Culture All of the things that make up an people’s entire way of life
Decade Ten years
Democracy Government controlled by its citizens
Dictatorship A system of government in which a country is ruled by a single person with absolute power.
Equator Line of latitude at zero degrees; Cuts the Earth in half making a northern and southern hemisphere
Ethnocentrism A belief in the superiority of a certain ethnic group or race.
Export The sending of goods out of a country to be sold
Extended Family Family consisting of several generations
Geography The study of where people, places & things are located & how they relate to each other
Hemisphere Half of the Earth
History Study of time after the development of written records
Import The bringing of goods in to a country to be bought
Interdependence Dependence of countries on the goods, resources and knowledge from other countries
Latitude Lines around the globe that measure distances north and south of the Equator
Longitude Lines around the globe that measure distances east and west of the Prime Meridian
Market Economy An economy based on free trade and supply and demand
Millennium One-thousand years
Mixed Economy An economic system which is a combination of Market and Command economic systems where market forces control most consumer goods, but government directs industry in need areas.
Monarchy A political system in which a country is ruled by a monarch.
Monotheism The belief in one god or goddess; Ex. Judaism, Christianity, Islam
Nuclear Family Family that includes parents and children
Polytheism The belief in more than one god or goddess; Ex. Hinduism
Prehistory Study of time before written records
Primary Source Evidence of event, people, etc. that comes from the person experiencing it; Ex. Diary, clothing
Prime Meridian Longitudinal line at zero degrees
Secondary Source A source that interprets a primary source; Ex. Documentary, magazine article
Tariff Tax on imported goods
Topography Study of the Earth’s features such as mountains and rivers
Traditional Economy An economy based on agriculture, with others in society working in simple crafts, such as the manufacturing of cloth or pottery
