What did Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson disagree over? The Constitution led to the development of political parties They disagreed over whether the National govt. or state governments would have more power.
What did the British Army do during the War of 1812? Burned & destroyed Washington D.C.
What was the result of the War of 1812? A feeling of nationalism developed in the US, and no territory was lost nor was any gained, US gained European respect as a protector of freedom of the seas.
What was the Louisiana Purchase and how did it change the Unites States? A huge land purchase that doubled the size of the U.S., bought from France, Jefferson thought that it was unconstitutional because of his strict interpretation of the Constitution.
What did George Washington say in his Farewell Address? To not establish permanent alliances with European countries, warned about political parties, and to have fair taxes.
What was the Monroe Doctrine? When Monroe told European countries to stay out of the Americas and the US agreed not to interfere in European affairs
Which parties did Hamilton and Jefferson belong to and what was each parties's point of view? Hamilton-Federalist, strong Federal gov’t, Loose interpretation of the Constitution Jefferson-Democratic- Republican, strong state governments, believed in strict interpretation of the Constitution.

The tariffs in the early 1800’s were meant to protect what part of the country? WHY? They were passed to protect Northern factories from British competition
What is sectionalism and why did it develop? Loyalty to an area & it developed because of different economic interests in the North & South.
What was the South’s reaction to the Tariff of 1832? Anger & the South threatened to secede, led to the Nullification Crises
What was the Industrial Revolution in the 1800’s? People moved from farming areas to factory centers, shift from hand-made products to those made by machines, start of the Factory System.
What was the economy of the North and the South in the early 1800’s? North- industry, free-labor/ South-agriculture (Cash Crops) due to the invention of the cotton gin cotton is king, slave labor.
What was gained as a result of the War with Mexico? Mexican Cession (California), an established border of Texas,

What is Manifest Destiny? Expand the U.S. across the continent; spread democracy, open new markets & spread Christianity
Explain the Indian Removal Act of 1832. Forced Native Americans out of the S. Eastern United States, led to the Trail of Tears.

What is an abolitionist? Name three famous abolitionists. Someone who fought against slavery. Ex: William Lloyd Garrison, Sojourner Truth, and Fredrick Douglass, John Brown, Harriet Beecher Stowe.
What are state’s rights? Right of states to nullify federal laws
• Compromise of 1850 Compromise created by Henry Clay that said California would be admitted as a free state, there would be a harsher fugitive slave law, and the slave trade would be abolished
• Tariffs Taxes on imported goods
• Reconstruction Time period after the Civil War when the South was assimilated back into the Union

What is the Missouri Compromise? Slavery was extended west of the Mississippi, Maine becomes a free state and Missouri becomes a slave state, banned slavery north the rest of the La. Purchase, an attempt to maintain the balance in Congress between the slave and free-states
Who were Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun? What are their accomplishments Congressmen~ Henry Clay is known as the Great Compromiser, wrote Missouri Compromise, Calhoun is the largest support of States Rights but also wants compromise.
What was the Dred Scott decision? Stated that slaves were property, couldn’t sue in court, ruled Missouri Compromise unconstitutional violated the 5th Amendment due process of law.
What happened at Appomattox Courthouse? Lee surrendered to Grant.
Who was the commander at the end of the war of both the Union and Confederacy? Union- Grant Confederacy- Lee
13th amendment? Freed Slaves
14th amendment? Gave freedmen citizenship
15th amendment? Gave freedman the right to vote
Radical Reconstruction Plan 1. South divided into 5 military districts 2. states supervised by the US Army 3. Southern states had to ratify the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments
Who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin and what affect did it have on the North/South? Harriet Beecher Stowe; gave more knowledge of slavery
What are the years the Civil War was fought? 1861-1865
Who was the first to secede from the Union and in what year? South Carolina in 1860, thought they had the right to secede due to state’s rights.
