Jazz Age/Depression

QuestionAnswer
What is the Jazz Age and what was significant about that name? Time in US History when Jazz was popular. Jazz's fast pace and upbeat sound represented a time of excess - living well and fast.
How does the name "Roaring 20s" inform us about the 1920s? The word roaring referred to the money and opportunity experienced by many Americans during the 1920s.
What is a "flapper"? A woman who had short hair, wore short skirts, and frequented speakeasies where she often danced by "flapping" her legs to either side.
What is a speakeasy? A secret bar or saloon that served alcohol during prohibition and required a secret password to gain entry. Patrons would whisper the password at the door speaking softly, or easily.
Why was alcohol prohibited? Many people were concerned with the excess they were seeing during the Jazz Age and were worried that alcohol was creating an immoral or uncivilized society.
What were two of the major causes of the Great Depression? The stock market crash and the farm crisis.
How did the Great Depression affect all layers of society? Rich and poor were hurt. Unemployment was at an all-time high, banks failed, people began living in shantytowns called "Hoovervilles", and people joined huge soup lines to get food.
What did FDR do to try to get the country out of the Great Depression? The New Deal. Numerous government programs gave young men jobs building roads and parks, planting trees, and other public projects. When one program failed, another quickly took its place.
How did the US finally get out of the Great Depression? Preparing weapons and supplies for World War II helped bring needed money back into the US economy.
