An Era of Reform

What is abolitionism? When people were against slavery.
Who was Nat Turner? He was a slave that organized a rebellion to kill all white men that lived in the town.
Why was what Nat Turner did so important? Slaves were trying to have their own right and he supported them. He also made white men scared.
What abolitionist published a newspaper called the Liberator? William Lloyd Garrison
Why were many white northern factory workers opposed to abolitionism? The white men were worried that the slaves were going to come up to the north and take over their factories.
Why weren't slaves usually taught how to read? They wouldn't be able to read the signs if they tried to run away.
How did Frederick Douglas learn to read? He went around to little kids and said, "I bet you can't spell that word." Or- "How do you spell that?" He then created his own alphabet.
What did Douglas call his newspaper and why? The North Star. When slaves ran away, they would follow this star all the way to the north.
What is the Underground Railroad? Where houses of the Quakers lived- that helped slaves when they ran away, so they would not get caught as they traveled north.
What religious group was involved in the Underground Railroad? The Quakers
Who was the most famous conductor in the Underground Railroad? Harriet Tubman
Name a woman who was involved in early woman's rights movement. Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Name 3 ways woman were discriminated against in the early 1800s? 1- woman didn't have the right to vote. 2- woman worked, but had to give their money to their husband. 3- woman were not allowed to go to school.
Where was the first woman's rights convention held? Seneca Falls
What document did the woman right to explain their anger over inequality? Declaration of Sentiments
What famous document did the woman base their document on? The Declaration of Independence
Why did woman use the Declaration of Independence as a model? They were basically declaring independence, but wanting both men and woman to be equal.
Explain what happened to most mentally ill people in the early 1880s. Most were thrown in jail because they could not control themselves.
Explain how prisoners were treated in the early 1800s. They were treated terribly because they didn't know how to treat them. They beat them and didn't do anything with them.
Who fought for the rights of the mentally ill and prisoner reform? Dorthia Dix
Who fought for mandatory public education for American boys? Horce Mann
Why was education reform necessary? Boys needed an education so they could get better jobs than the farm or the factory.
Why was temperance necessary? It was the fight against drinking and drinking led to violence, unemployment and crime.
