Integumentary system

Blood vessels Bring blood to the skin and regulate body temperature
Nerve endings Sensory receptors for pressure, temperature, and pain
Subcutaneous layer Last layer of the integumentary system composed mostly of connective tissues and blood vessels
Integumentary system Skin and it's appendages
Sebaceous glands Glands located along the shaft of the hair, secrete an oily substance
Sudoriferous glands Secrete sweat
Eccrine glands Most numerous type of sweat gland
Apocrine glands Larger sweat glands located in axillary and pubic regions
Mammary glands Secrete milk
Ceruminous glands Located in the ear canal, secrete wax
Hair Consist of shaft, root and bulb, provide limited protection
Fingernails and toenails Hardened layer of stratum corneum, helps protect and aids in picking up
What are the functions of the integumentary system? Protection, temperature regulation, sensory reception, and cutaneous absorption
How does the integumentary system protect against? Dehydration and invasion of pathogenic organisms
how does the integumentary system provide temperature regulation? It produces and secretes sweat and diverts blood to the superficial layers to dissipate heat
How does the integumentary system provide sensory reception? Through receptors that respond to pain, touch, pressure, and temperature.
What does the integumentary system absorb through cutaneous absorption? Ultraviolet light, some oxygen, and some carbon dioxide

Stratum germinatium Stratum basale, cells produced here
Melanocytes Produce melanin
Melanin A brownish pigment that helps protect from UV light
Cyanosis Bluish color to skin indicating lack of circulation
Albino Genetic disorder in which melanocytes cannot produce melanin leaving skin characteristically white or void of color
