Integumentary system
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Epidermis | Skin; composed mostly of squamous cells |
Stratum corneum | Outermost layer of skin |
Keratin | A protein found in the stratum corneum |
Stratum basale | Innermost layer of skin |
Melanin | A dark pigment to the skin and hair |
Dermis | Layer below the skin |
Arrector pili | Muscle attatched to the root of the hair |
Blood vessels | Bring blood to the skin and regulate body temperature |
Nerve endings | Sensory receptors for pressure, temperature, and pain |
Subcutaneous layer | Last layer of the integumentary system composed mostly of connective tissues and blood vessels |
Integumentary system | Skin and it's appendages |
Sebaceous glands | Glands located along the shaft of the hair, secrete an oily substance |
Sudoriferous glands | Secrete sweat |
Eccrine glands | Most numerous type of sweat gland |
Apocrine glands | Larger sweat glands located in axillary and pubic regions |
Mammary glands | Secrete milk |
Ceruminous glands | Located in the ear canal, secrete wax |
Hair | Consist of shaft, root and bulb, provide limited protection |
Fingernails and toenails | Hardened layer of stratum corneum, helps protect and aids in picking up |
What are the functions of the integumentary system? | Protection, temperature regulation, sensory reception, and cutaneous absorption |
How does the integumentary system protect against? | Dehydration and invasion of pathogenic organisms |
how does the integumentary system provide temperature regulation? | It produces and secretes sweat and diverts blood to the superficial layers to dissipate heat |
How does the integumentary system provide sensory reception? | Through receptors that respond to pain, touch, pressure, and temperature. |
What does the integumentary system absorb through cutaneous absorption? | Ultraviolet light, some oxygen, and some carbon dioxide |
Integumentary system | Skin and appendages of the skin |
Stratum germinatium | Stratum basale, cells produced here |
Melanocytes | Produce melanin |
Melanin | A brownish pigment that helps protect from UV light |
Cyanosis | Bluish color to skin indicating lack of circulation |
Albino | Genetic disorder in which melanocytes cannot produce melanin leaving skin characteristically white or void of color |
