Where did the Incas settle in 1200 C.E.? In Cuzco, a village in the Andes Mountains. (Pg. 39)
Who became the ruler of the Incas in 1438 C.E.? "Pachacuti", which means "He who shakes the Earth". (Pg. 39)
Did the Incas use cement to build their pyramids? No. They shaped the rocks so well that cement was not needed. (Pg. 39)
A related group of Incan mummies were found - what are they called? "Chachapoya" - meaning "The Cloud People". (Notes; they came from Northern Peru.)
How do we know the Incas believed in an afterlife? Because food jars were found near the mummies with dried food at the bottoms of them. (Notes.)

What are some things Moctezuma's spies reported to him about the Spanish? They had a "house in the water"; their hands and faces were white; They had long, bushy beards; Their clothes were "every color: white, yellow, red, green, blue, and purple." (Pg. 45)
What is an "encomienda"? Rights to demand taxes or labor from Native Americans. Spanish claimed they were "protecting" the Indians, but they were actually forced to stay there. (Pg. 47)
What are "Mestizos"? "People of mixed Spanish and Native American descent. Most of them were poor and lived on the outskirts of towns. (Pg. 47)
Which former slave led the people of Saint-Domingue in their fight for freedom? Toussaint L'Ouverture. (Pg. 50)
What was the name of the Argentine who helped Chile and Peru win their freedom from the Spanish in 1817? Jose de San Martin. (Pg. 53)
Who was the first Latin American revolutionary leader? Simon Bolivar. (Pg. 52)
Which Latin American country gained its freedom without fighting? Brazil. They were granted their freedom by the king's son, Dom Pedro, in 1822 C.E. (Pg. 54)

What is an "astrolabe"? It is a device used by Europeans to navigate across oceans using the stars. (Pg. 43)
Which Spanish explorer conquered the Incan Empire in 1535 C.E.? How did he do this? Francisco Pizzaro. He took a group of 180 Spanish soldiers and sailed to the Pacific coast of South America. Then, he killed the Incan emperor and many other Incan leaders. (Pgs. 45 & 46)
What was the Columbian Exchange? "A widespread movement of plants, animals, culture, human populations, communicable diseases, and ideas between the Eastern & Western Hemisphere." (Pg. 47, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbian_Exchange for a definition.)
Choose four of these events and put them in chronological order: Incas settle in Peru; Aztec empire expands to Guatemala; Aztecs find a permanent home; Mayan civilization flourishes for 600 years. *Use page 36 to find these dates and put them in order.
What did the Incas do for work? They were "farmers, builders, and managers." (Pg. 40.)
Who did the Aztecs think the Europeans were when they first saw them? They thought Cortes might be their god Quetzalcoatl returning to rule the Aztecs. (Pg. 45)
