During the 1800s, advances in technology and transportation shaped the North's economy.
African Americans endured hardship and misery. They made no money and had no hope of freedom.
African Americans feared being sold to another planter and seperated from their loved ones.
The main economic goal for a large plantation was to earn profits.
In 1840 the US had 3,000 miles of train tracks. In 1860 it had 31,00 miles of train tracks.
The development of the first railroads in the US was small stretches of tracks connecting to rivers.
Mass production in factories began in New England in the early 1800s.
By 1860, the Northeast part of the US produced most of the country's manufactured goods.
Canals conected lakes and rivers to open new shipping routes for goods for trade.
The steel tipped plow was invented in 1837 by John Deere and made farming much easier.
Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper. Which harvested grain much faster than the hand held sickles.
Growing wheat became more profitable because of agricultural inventions.
The North was mostly industrialized while the South was mostly invested in agriculture.
