Organized labor in 1980s Unions were declining in 1970s as industry jobs disappeared and Reagan undercut their ability to negotiate wages and working conditions.

Reaganomics It was an economic program. Limited government in response to stagflation. Based on side-supply economics, theory that tax cuts will create growth.
Recession of early 1980s 1981 tax cuts sparked it. Ended 1984.
1984 election Reagan won.
Deregulation Reagan deregulated businesses and banks. Effects were more capitalism and competition.
Junk bond industry Michael Milken offered high-interest financing to bad credit corporations. Led to high profit. Caused insider trading scandals of late 1980s.
Reagan defense buildup Reagan buildup defense in response to Soviets and also made Strategic Defense Initiative.
Reagan Doctrine US would openly support anticommunist movements.
Mikhail S. Gorbachev New Soviet leader
perestroika and glasnost Under Soviets, perestroika was restructuring reform program and glasnost was liberalized authoritarian political system.
1987 INF Treaty Banned landbased international missles in Europe. Signaled end to Cold War.
Social issues Poor and middle class were having issues like homelessness while rich were living great lives.
Immigrants Immigrants flooded in from Asia while Latino population grew.
1988 election George Bush won.
Soviet Union collapse SU collapsed as countries were revolting.
Saddam Hussein Sought to fight economic troubles with conquering Kuwait. Bush responded with economic boycott and Operation Desert Storm.
Americans with Disabilities Act 1990, banned job discrimination and required accommodations for disabilities.
Clarence Thomas Showed gender gap in politics when Thomas was portrayed as victim of sexual harrassment.
Globalization international world trade
CA's Proposition 13 Cut of property taxes during population boom=state government became broke.
Bill Clinton Won 1992 election. Adopted "Don't ask, don't tell" slogan. One major goal was affordable healthcare. Was reelected 1996 election.
New Economy Time when information technology was new and exciting.
NAFTA, GATT, and WTO Lowered trade and investment barriers internationally.
Multinational corporations of 1990s Pushed towards homogeneous global culture.
Economics of 1990s There was a stock boom and growth. Standard of living went up.
Clinton Impeachment Scandals like Whitewater investigation and Monica Lewinsky affair lead to impeachment of Clinton.
Family and Medical Leave Act Allowed workers to take time off to care for ailing family and not get fired.
