Leishmania species Causes Leishmaniasis (cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral) vector=sandfly (phlebotomus) visceral is most deadly -> causes Kala-Azar (Mastigophora-flagellated)
Giardia species (Giardia Lamblia) Causes chronic diarrhea with fatty stool and abdominal pain, contracted by drinking contaminated mountain streams, resistant to chlorine (Mastigophora-flagellated)
Trichomonas vaginalis Causes malodorous frothy, yellow-green discharge, men are asympomatic carriers, treated by metronidazole (leaves metallic taste in mouth) (Mastigophora-flagellated)
Trypanosoma brucei (African Sleeping Sickness) causes coma via meningoencephalitis, vector=tsetse fly (Hemoflagellates-found in blood and lymph)
Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease or American Trypanosomiasis) causes fatal damage to heart, vector=Reduviidae or Kissing Bug, sucks blood from lips, eyelids, or ears (Hemoflagellates-found in blood and lymph)
Entamoeba histolytica Causes amoebic dysentery via ingesting cysts (Sarcodina-pseudopod amoeboid)
Naegleria fowleri Causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis via swimming in infected water or inhaling cysts
Plasmodium species causes... Malaria (non-motile apicomplexa)
Plasmodium falciparum Causes malignant tertian malaria = fever every other day or 36-48 hours and black urine
Plasmodium vivax Causes benign tertian malaria = fever every other day (48 hours)
Plasmodium ovale Causes ovale tertian = fever every other day (48 hours)
Plasmodium malariae Causes quartan = fever every third day (72 hours)
Toxoplama gondii Causes hepatitis, pneumonia, blindness, and severe neuro disorders, can cross placenta to cause spontaneous abortion, still birth, and/or mental retardation, host=cats (Apicomplexa-non-motile)
Cryptosporidium parvum Causes profuse watery diarrhea, hosts=domestic animals (Apicomplexa-non-motile)
Balantidium coli Causes ulcers in large intestine, host=pigs, (Ciliophora)
Microspora Obligate intracellular pathogen, causes chronic diarrhea in immunocompromised ppl
