QuestionAnswer
Did the Inca have a social class system? Yes. The emperor was the Sapa Inca which means unique one.
How did the Inca farm high up in the Andes mountains? By using terracing and irrigation.
What is terracing? Cutting step-like terraces into the sides of the mountain to make more farm land.
What is irrigation? Bringing water from the natural source to the farm land.
What are some types of food the Inca ate? Guinea pig, turkey, potatoes, popcorn, cashews, strawberries, corn.
What is the real name of the Inca people? Quechua (which is also the name of their language). The word Inca means king in the Quechua language.
What did the Inca make their homes out of? Stone, wood, and thatch. Nobility homes were larger but did not have more furniture than the commoners.
How did the Inca make their clothing? By weaving llama or alpaca wool.
What is a totalitarian government? A government where only one person rules and the people have no choice who that person will be.
How and when did the Inca empire begin? The empire began in 1438 AD/CE when the leader Pachacutec united all the villages by conquering them. He called himself "Earthshaker"
What countries are included in the Inca empire? Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile
Who was the Sapa Inca? What was his life like? The was the emperor. He was treated like a god. He never wore the same clothes twice. Servants fed him and he was mummified when he died.
Were the Inca pagans? What does that mean? Yes, they were. The Inca believed in more than one god.
Who was the main god of the Inca? Why? Inti, the sun god was the main god. The Inca had a festival for Inti called the Intirami in spring to celebrate the good harvest.
What did the Inca call gold and silver? Gold was sweat of the sun and silver was tears of the moon.
Did the Inca use human sacrifice? Yes, but they were not interested in the blood like the Mesoamericans. The Inca left the victims out in the cold on the mountains to die or throw them off of cliffs. They usually sacrificed children of the nobility.
How do we know the Inca sacrificed humans? Some of the children that were sacrificed were mummified by the cold and found in Peru.
Why did the Inca need many roads? Messangers would bring information throughout the empire, keeping good communication.
What are suspension bridges? Why did the Inca need them? They are bridges without supports underneath. The bridges helped to link the empire because of the high mountains.
How did they build their big buildings? By using large blocks of stone fitted together so tightly that you cannot fit a sheet of paper between them.
What happened to the Inca empire? Two brothers fought over control of the empire and fought each other.
What is a civil war and how did it help to end the Inca empire? A civil war is when two groups in the same country/area fight each other. With the empire weak from war, they were easier to conquer.
Who finally conquered the Inca? Fransisco Pizarro lead the Spanish in 1532. It took less than a year to defeat the Inca.
What other things helped to weaken the Inca empire? Disease brought by the Spanish
How did the Inca pay their taxes? By doing work, called mita service. (like working in the fields or mines)
Who helped to run the Inca empire? There were four governors and even spies that helped to get information to the Sapa Inca.
Did the Inca have a writing system? No, they never developed a system of writing.
Did the Incas have a number system. They did not have a number system but they used knotted ropes to count and keep track of information. The ropes were called quipus.
What was the capital city of the Inca? Cuzco, the city is still standing today.
Who was Hiram Bingham? An explorer who found the ruins of the Inca city Mach Picchu in the 1800's.
What is important about the city Machu Picchu? The city was built high up in the Andes mountains and no one knows how it was built or why it was abandoned.
Why was the llama important? The llama was used for wool, meat, and to carry things up the mountains.
Who is Juanita? The name given to the mummy of a 14 year old girl found in the mountains. She was thought to be a sacrificial victim. The mummy is 500 years old.
