Who was Louis XVI? | A French king who helped the colonists defeat the British in the American Revolution, but wasted much money, which leads France's economy to bankruptcy. Later, he was arrested with her wife, Marie Antionette, and executed in the guillotine. |
Who was Marie Antionette? | Wife of Louis XVI, who spent much money on gowns, crowns, jewelry, etc. She was later arrested with her husband and executed on the guillotine, too. |
Estates-General- | An assembly of representatives from all 3 of the estates, or social classes, in France. |
National Assembly- | A French congress, formed by the representatives of the 3rd Estate, that create laws and reforms in the name of the French people. |
Tennis Court Oath- | A pledge made by the members of France's National Assembly in 1789. |
Great Fear- | A wave of senseless panic that spread through the French countryside after the storming of Bastille in 1789. |
Declaration of the Rights of Man- | A statement of revolutionary ideals adopted by France's National Assembly in 1789. |
Legislative Assembly- | A 2nd French govt. with the power to create laws and approve declarations of war, established by the Constitution of 1791. |
Emigres- | People who leave their native country for political reasons. |
Sans-culottes- | A radical group made up of Parisian wageearners and small shopkeepers who wanted a greater voice in govt., lower prices, and an end of food shortage. |
Guillotine- | A machine for beheading people, used as a means of execution during the French Revolution. |
