Europeans took the best land, 3.) Europeans drew new boundaries for countries, but did not respect ethnic boundaries. (Pg. 46)
What was the "Force Publique"? The "Public Force" - an army of Congolese natives with European officers. They captured Africans and enslaved them - or used force to threaten them - if they didn't harvest rubber for them.
Who was Leon Rom? He was a ruthless Force Publique officer. He lived in their headquarters and ordered his troops to shoot the wives of husbands who would not work. Had severed human heads on posts around the headquarters. (Notes)
Who was Edmund Dene Morel? A British shipping clerk who conducted business in the Belgian Congo. He was one of the first to discover the atrocities happening in the Belgian Congo.
King Leopold II was directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths in the CFS (Congo Free State). About how many Africans was he responsible for killing? He killed (or had killed) between 11 and 23 million Africans.
