Lightner Witmer Founder of clinical psychology (1896). Est. First pysh clinic, named the field, founded first clinical psych journal, developed first training program
Role of WWII and the VA in creating clinical psychology Veterans who experienced emotional trauma (shell shock/PTSD). Not enough mental health professionals, so training was funded for clinical psychologists.
Boulder Model Scientist-practitioner model: Clinical psychologists should fulfill dual roles; scientist and practitioner
Clinical Psychologist Requires either Ph.D (Research, assessment, and treatment, emphasizes research) or Psy.D (Assessment and treatment, training emphasizes clinical practice)
Psychiatry M.D.: physicians (perscribe medication), training emphasizes diagnosis and treatment
Counseling psychologists Ph.D or M.A., focuses on "normal" or moderately maladgusted individuals, educational or vocational counseling
Social Workers "Terminal Masters", field work, more interfering with daily life
Medical Model It is a model that assumes, that every mental illness has its biological (physiological) basis-- it's an effect of chemical inbalance in the brain, physical abnormality in the brain or genetical abnormality.

Empirically validated treatments Treatments that have been tested and empirically shown to be effective
Radeke and Mahoney (2000) Psychologists will probably have a change in emotional experiences and will find work both stressful and rewarding

Unstructured Clinical Interview goals Rapport, Info gathering, clinical conceptualization
Rapport Build a good working relationship with the client
Empathy Understand the feelings and experiences of the client
Attending behavior nonverbal means of demonstrating listening and understanding
Open-ended questions give client the responsibility and latitude for responding (tell me about your wife)
Facilitative questions encourage client's flow of conversation; care enough to listen, learn what's important, share control, allow observation
