Science Concepts: Mixtures and Solutions

QuestionAnswer
What is a mixture? Combines two or more materials that retain their own properties.
What is a solution? a mixture on which one material seems to disappear in another.
What is a crystal? The solid phase of a material that forms in an identifiable shape or pattern.
What happens when a solid dissolves in a liquid? The solid seems to disappear.
What happens when liquids evaporate? they change into a gas and disperse into the air.
What results when a solvent has dissolved as much material as it can? A saturated solution.
What refers to the amount of material that can dissolve in a given solvent? Solubility
Solubility is different for different materials, what else can change it? Temperature and different solvents.
What is the amount of material dissolved in a measure of liquid? Concentration
What is the three-dimensional space occupied by liquid? Volume
When a change results from mixing two or more materials, that change is a chemical reaction. What is the reaction result in. A reaction results in new products.
What is a solid material that sometimes forms as a product of a reaction? Precipitate
What is sometimes a product of a reaction? Gas
What are the active chemicals in a reaction? Reactants
Some products of a reaction are soluble and can be observed only after what? Evaporating the solution
What has the least solubility? Baking Soda
What has the most solubility? Citric Acid
