Who led Continental Army? George Washington
Where did the battle of Bunker Hill take place? On Breed Hill. The hill next to Bunker Hill where the patriots had just put up a fort.
Who won the Battle of Bunker Hill? The British, after their third attempt. The Americans were out of gun powder. 1000 British were killed/wounded and 1/2 the Americans.
William Howe British general who led the British in the Battle of Bunker Hill.
Israel Putnam American who led troops up Breed Hill to constuct fort.
Did the Continental Army have lots of supplies to start with. NO! Geoge Washington started a rumor that they had more than they knew what to do with to slow down the British. The British believed this. He used the time to round up guns and gun powder.
How did George Washington force British out of Boston? He lined the outside hills with cannons and soldiers. General Howe and his troops and loyalists abandoned the city. They headed to Canada.
After the troops left did the Americans want independence? No. They still hoped to reconcile things with King George. King George called them rebels and traiters. Everyone agreed that independence was necessary.
Thomas Paine Wrote a pamplet called Common Sense. "Of more worth is one honest man to society, than all the crowned ruffians wo ever lived" "The sun never shined on a cause of greater worth"
Did Thomas Paine's pamplet and thoughts help to persuade colonists? Yes, more than 120,000 copies were printed.
Who wrote the first draft of the Declation of Independence? Thomas Jefferson
What famous patriot wrote to his wife "The second day of July...will be celebrated by succeeding generations with games, sports, shows.." John Adams
Why wasn't the Declaration of independence signed on July 2nd as planned? There was debate over the passage on slavery. It was removed.
Who said "we must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately" Benjamin Franklin about signing the Declaration of Independence. By signing it they were all guilty of treason according to Britain.
How many people signed the Declaration of Independence? 56
Did those that signed the Declaration of Independence come under attack by the British? Yes. Many lost everything including their home, families, and wealth.
Ticonderga An old British fort in New York that had been seized. George Washington sent men here for guns/supplies and they were brought back to Boston for the American army.
Olive Branch Petition Petition sent to King George after the troops were forced out of Boston. Colonists hoped to end the argument. King George called them rebels and traitors. It didn't make a change.
