Andrew Jackson 1767-1845 Soldier, political leader. Led the American army to victory in the Battle of New Orleans, 1815. Served as a senator in Congress. Elected President of the United States 1828.
John Ross 1790-1866 Cherokee leader. Tried to stop American settlers from taking Cherokee lands. Was forced to lead the Cherokee on the "Trail of Tears". Helped write a constitution for the Cherokee.
Stephen F. Austin 1793-1836 Pioneer, political leader. Led early settlers from the US to Texas. Helped Texans win independence from Mexico. Served as Secretary of State of the Republic of Texas.
James K Polk 1795-1849 Political leader. Elected President of the United States in 1844. Wanted US to expand. Achieved goals of gaining much of Oregon country, all of California, and other western lands.
Sojourner Truth 1797-1883 Abolitionist. Traveled to preach for an end to slavery. Made many speeches for women's rights. Visited President Abraham Lincoln in the White House in 1864.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton 1815-1902 Abolitionist, women's rights leader. Helped organize the first women's rights convention. Called for equal rights for women. Leader of movement to give women the right to vote.
Frederick Douglass 1817-1895 Abolitionist. A leader of the movement against slavery. Started the anti-slavery newspaper, the North Star. Published his autobiography, "Narrative of the Life of Frederrick Douglass," in 1845.
Levi Strauss 1829-1902 Salesperson, clothing manufacturer. Opened a dry goods store in San Francisco. Made sturdy work pants for miners. Founded a company to manufacture denim jeans.
