Complement | Group of blood proteins that helps antibodies to destroy foreign cells |
Gamma Globulin | Proteiin fraction in the blood plasma that contains antibodies |
Immunity | Power of an individual to resist or overcome the effects of a particular disease or other harmful agent |
Immunization | Use of a vaccine to produce immunity; vaccination |
Inflamation | Response of tissues to injury; characterized by heat redness, swelling, and pain |
Interferon | Group of substances released from virus-infected cells that prevent spread of infection to other cells; also nonspecifically boost the immune system |
Lymph | Fluid in the lymphatic system |
Lymphatic Duct | Vessel of the lymphatic system |
Lymphcyte | Agranular white blood cell that functions in immunity |
Lymph Node | Mass of lymphoid tissue along the path of a lymphatic vessel that filters lymph and harbors white blood cells active in immunity |
Macrophage | Large phagocytic cell that develops from a monocyte; presents antigen to lymphocytes in immune response |
Plasma Cell | Cell derived from a B cell that produces antibodies |
Spleen | Lymphoid organ in the upper left region of the abdomen |
T Cell | Lymphocyte active in immunity that matures in the Thymus gland; destroys foreign cells directly, T lymphocyte |
Thymus | Endocrine gland in the upper portion of the chest; stimulates development of T cells |
Tonsil | Mass of lymphoid tissue in the region of the pharynx |
Vaccine | Substance used to produce active immunity; usually , a suspention of attenuated or killed pathogens or some component of a pathogengiven by inoculation to prevent a specific disease |
