Why has learning about ancient West African history been difficult for historians? Because ancient Africans wrote on materials that degraded easily; also had no written language - all oral traditions.
What inventions helped scientists & historians study Africa beginning in the 1900's? Modern transportation helped them conquer Africa's geography. (Pg. 37)
What kind of trip did Dr. Livingstone say he was going on? What do primary sources reveal he actually did? He said he was going on a "missionary" trip. Sources help us see he was actually on a scientific mission. (Handout.)
How does Dr. Livingstone survive in Africa? (Who helps him?) African guides he hired helped Livingstone survive on his journey. (Handout.)
In the "Bizarre Foods" video clip, host Andrew Zimmer eats honey at the local Ethiopian market. Why is it so yellow? The honey is yellow because it is very raw and contains a lot of pollen. (Video analysis guide.)

In the video we watched, Andrew Zimmer eats with the Tiya villagers. The bowls are decorated with shells. What does this say about their culture ("way of life")? That they live fairly close to the sea to be able to get the shells, so they must rely on it for food. That they have some leisure time ("spare time") to take time & make these decorations. What is 1 difference between the Open Market in Ethiopia versus Goa, India (the video we saw 2 units ago)? Some examples include: 1. The Ethiopian market sold more diary - based products; 2. The Goa market had a lot more spices; 3. The Goa market sold food the was pickled, where the Ethiopian market did not. (Video Analysis Guide.)
What can we learn from the way the Tiya culture from the way villagers greeted Andrew Zimmer? 1. They did not have many visitors and so they respected them. 2. That people are very important to them, not material wealth. 3. That they appreciate the time visitors do give if they come, so they want to meet and talk to them.
How do the African women show Zimmer respect while they eat? They feed him some food from the plate. This is a show of respect for the visitor. (Video analysis guide.)
How does Zimmer "return the favor" of the villagers respect after eating? He gives the hostess the cloth to make a dress he bought earlier. Zimmer learns about this tradition from his guide. (Video analysis guide.)

How do the Hippopotamus survive the extreme heat of Africa? The hippos wallow in deep mud all day to stay cool. Then, they rinse and cool themselves in small lakes or rivers. ("Virunga" video.)
What two names has the west coast of Africa been called (the area near Ghana)? The "slave coast" and the "gold coast"? (Pg. 45.)
By 900 C.E., what items were being traded in Ghana? Gold, salt, kola nuts, cloth, horses, and fine woods. (Pg. 45)

How many years did it take for the Bantu Migration to be completed? What obstacles were in their way? It took 1,000 years for the Bantu Migration. Tropical rainforests and the massive Congo River stood in their way. (Maps, pgs. 37 & 38.)
How did historians track the Bantu Migration? Historians find places where Bantu speaking people live today to track the Bantu Migration. (Pg. 39.)
What famous tribe of African hunters are actually Bantu descendants? *Hint: They wear a bright red cloth. The Massai tribe descended from the Bantu tribe. (Pg. 41.)
Who was the famous African emperor who ruled the kingdom of Mali in the early 14th century? Mansa Musa ruled the kingdom of Mali in the 14th century. (Pg. 41.)
Why was Mansa Musa reign so important to history? Mansa Musa's reign was so important because when he made the "hajj", he made connections with other Muslim leaders. Then, he used these ties to create a huge empire with better education, more Mosques, more trade connections, and larger cities.
What were two important items traded in Askum? What were they used for? Frankincense & myrrh. Myrrh is used in perfumes & as a medicine. Frankincense was used as medicine & in religious ceremonies. (Pg. 50.)
What type of vegetation region surrounds the area where the 3 major Medieval African empires were located? The area is in west Africa and is surrounded by tropical savanna. (Pg. 38)
