Navigation Acts Passed by English Parliament. Regulated trade between England & its colonies. The purpose of these laws was to ensure that only England benefited from Colonial trade. (pg. 121)
What was the name of a trade route that went from West Africa to the West Indies and the New England Colonies? Triangular Trade route. (Pg. 122)
What is a "legislature"? "A group of people who have the power to make laws." The House of Representatives and the Senate are modern examples. (Pg. 122)
Who made up the "upper" house in most Colonies? Advisers appointed by the governor. (Pg. 122)
Who made up the "lower" house? People elected by other Colonists. It approved laws, protect citizen's rights, & approve taxes the governor asked for. (Pg. 122)
Who could vote in the Colonies by 1720? White Christian men over the age of 21 who owned property. Some Colonies allowed only Protestants or members of a particular church could vote. (Pg. 122)
What did the Magna Carta do? Limited the power of the monarchy. Now, kings/ queens had to ask Parliament before passing new taxes. (Pg. 90.)
What is a "bill of rights"? A written list of freedoms the government promises to protect. (Pg. 123.)
What did the English Bill of Rights protect specifically? Protected the rights of individuals; gave anyone accused of a crime the right to a trial by jury; & that a ruler could not raise taxes or armies without Parliament's approval. (Pg. 123)
Which of the following groups had more rights in the Colonies: unmarried or widowed women or married women? Unmarried women & widows had more rights. (Pg. 123)
Name 3 goods New England shipped to West Africa. 1. Rum; 2. Guns; 3. cloth; (tools, gunpowder, too). (Pg. 122)
Name 2 goods the West Indies sent to New England. Why did New England want these? Sugar & molasses. Colonists used these to make rum. (Pg. 121)
What was the condition of Native American rights in the 1720's? "Native Americans had almost no rights." (Pg. 123)
What was the order of social classes in the Colonies? 1. Gentry (wealthy planters); 2. Middle class (land owners & skilled craftsworkers); 3. Indentured servants, "hired hands", & slaves (indentured servants = people who signed 4-7 yr. contracts to people who'd pay their way to settle in the Colonies.
What kind of work did women in the Colonies do (compared to men)? The same work that men did: carry a gun and hunt, took care of their family. (Pg. 127)
What was the Great Awakening? Who helped "set it off"? The Great Awakening was a set of sermons given in all Colonies. Johnathan Edwards is one preacher who helped start it off. (Pg. 127 & 128).
In 1642, the New England Colonies instituted changes to education. Who had to go to school at this point? "Towns with 50 or more families had to hire a schoolteacher." (Pg. 128)
What is a "market economy"? A market economy is, "An economic system in which resources are allocated by decisions of individuals & businesses". (Notes/ "Aero Plane Challenge" lab.)
In the "mercantilism & trade" simulation; what kind of economic system was modeled during the 1st two rounds? As the simulation went on, who ended up controlling more wealth? A market economy. The King/ Queen ended up controlling more wealth. Colonists had to give away resources in taxes, so the monarch controlled most of the wealth. (Simulation/ notes.)
What were the 3 countries competing for North American Colonies in the mid-1700's? 1. France; 2. Spain; 3. the Netherlands. (Pg. 140.)
Why were the British "worried about" the French in the 1700's? Because they had lands closer to the British Colonies than the other 2. (Pgs. 140 - 141).
What two Native American tribes did the French have especially good relationships with? The Hurons & the Algonquins. (Pg. 141.)
Why were Native Americans upset with British settlers? Because they were farmers who ended up clearing the land and planting crops on Indian land. (Pg. 141.)
Which two Native American tribes played the French & British against each other during the French & Indian War? The Mohawk & Blackfoot. (Class notes.)
Who benefitted most from the Navigation Acts? Colonial cotton & cloth workers.
Why might we say that the Albany Plan of Union was a Colonial failure? Because the 13 Colonies proposed something but were unable to come together to pass it. (Ch. 5, Sec. 1)
What was the Enlightenment? "A movement of the 18th century that emphasized the use of reason to explain natural laws."
