"Corrupt Bargain" of 1824 Andrew Jackson and John Q. Adams run for president, and Clay, then speaker of the house, throws his support behind Adams in the House of Reps. and is made Secretary of State after Adams wins. Jackson thinks Clay was bribed with the position.
How did JOhn Q. Adams show a return to Washington's ideals? Didn't replace current officials for his own, urged Congress support of roads and canals, and a national university. Tried to deal fairly with the Indians, but Georgia threatened violence.
Andrew Jackson Becomes president in 1828, called "Old Hickory" by supporters, expresses egalitarian ideals, and uses the veto 12 times in office.
Spoils System Supporters are rewarded with positions in office.
Kitchen Cabinet The unofficial cabinet where President Jackson would go for advice. Jackson's official cabinet was mediocre, with VanBuren as secretary of state.
Samuel Swartwout First person to steal a million dollars from government
"Tariff of Abominations" aka Tariff of 1828- 45% tariff on raw materials, which greatly upset the South. When South Carolina tries to nullify, tariff is lowered to 35%
Tariff of 1833 Written by Henry Clay, it will lower the tariff by 10% over 8 years
Force Bill Gives the president the right to use force/the army to collect tariffs
Trail of Tears in 1831, Indians are removed from Georgia Territory to land further west, and 4,000 Indians die in the process
Bank War Clay tries to tries to recharter the Bank of the U.S., which is corrupt but better running than the wildcat banks, but it's vetoed by Jackson. The veto increased Jackson's power, but also put the West against the East.
How did Jackson destroy the Bank of the U.S.? Jackson orders treasury to stop putting money in the bank and puts it into wildcat banks. Supreme Court rules the bank unconstitutional, and raises interest rates, which kills the bank and hurts the West
Specie Circular Jackson's law, which said people could only pay in gold and silver. 800 banks close.
Martin van Buren President after Jackson- left with a depression (Panic of 1837) thanks to Jackson's bank war
Divorce Bill Proposed by Van Buren, the bill separated the bank from the government and stored money in the vaults of larger cities.
Peggy Eaton Affair Relationship between Calhoun and Jackson weakened when he defends Eaton from slander, of which Mrs. Calhoun is the main culprit.
