Why was the empire called "Byzantine"? Because the city of Byzantium became the new capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. It was renamed Constantinople
What is a "strait"? A narrow passage that links two bodies of water.
What does "schism" mean? A split.
The Byzantine Empire collapsed after what emperor died in 565 C.E.? Justinian.
What is the name for "paintings of saints and holy people"? Icons.
What caused the Byzantine Empire to crumble? Arguments about religion & politics.
Why is the Code of Justinian important? It became the "backbone of the legal systems of many European nations.
What are the 5 Pillars of Islam? 1.) Belief in one god; 2.) Prayer 5 x a day; 3.) Giving alms to the poor & sick; 4.) Fast during Ramadan; 5.) If able, make the "hajj" to Mecca.
What does the word "hajj" mean? "Pilgrimmage."
What is a minaret & what is it used for? "A tower." It's used for calling Muslims to prayer.
What did Muhammad call Christians & Jews? Why? "People of the book." He respected them.
Why did Muhammad respect Christians & Jews? They all believed in 1 god, too.
In 656, whose death "split the Muslim world in two"? Uthman.
What is the name of the 2 groups of Muslims? Shiite & Sunni.
What did/ do Shiites believe that makes them different (from Sunnis)? That the ruler should be a direct descendant of Muhammad.
What one belief do the Sunnis hold that makes them different from Shiites? No one man, not even Islamic leaders, should tell Muslims what the Quran taught.
What is the name of the Muslim holy book? Quran.
True or False: Muhammad believed that men & women were unequal. False. He believed all people are equal no matter what.
True or False: The Sunnis are the largest groups of Muslims worldwide. True.
What is a "caliph"? A chief ruler of Islam.
What is "tolerance"? Acceptance of differences.
What is the "Kabah"? Large, black building that is cube - shaped. It lies in the center of Mecca. During the Hajj, Muslims circle it 7 times and then touch & kiss the "black stone" in the Kabah.
What goods did the desert camel trains carry on desert supply trains? Perfumes, ivory, spices, silk, & precious metals such as gold.
What happened to Muhammad in 622? He & his followers went to Yathrib from Mecca.
What is a "prophet"? A person who carries God's message.
What is the "Hijra"? The term for the "migration" of early Muslims from Mecca to Yathrib.
Why did Islam spread so far so fast after Muhammad died (in 632)? People did not like the Byzantine or Persian Empires.
What does "Medina" mean? "City" - short for "City of the Prophet".
