EI 2-2 Five Elements

The Five Elements of Eastern Medicine

QuestionAnswer
The Five Elements Are not fixed entities or stable constituents of matter. They represent the quality of energy embodied by a particular form. Another name for them is the Five Processes. They are emblems for Qi in different conditions or states of existence.
The Five Processes Stages, Phases, Transitions, Transformations, Metamorphoses
Water Greater Yin - energy has stored potential - associated with winter, old age, and the Kidney and Bladder Meridians (Water irrigates Wood) (Water extinguishes Fire) Ancestral Inheritance
Wood Lesser Yang - (increasing, growing Yang) energy has expanding upward and outward - associated with spring, childhood, and the Liver and Gallbladder Meridians (Wood fuels fire) (Wood penetrates, pries or holds together Earth)
Fire Greater yang - energy peaks - associated with summer, adolescence, the Heart and Small Intestine Meridians (primary pair), and the Pericardium and Triple Heater Meridians (secondary pair). (Fire's ashes furnish Earth) (Fire melts metal) Associated w/heart
Earth Between Yin and Yang - energy is centered, balanced, and poised - associated with Indian summer or the end of each season, adulthood, and the Spleen and Stomach Meridans. (Earth condenses and consolidates into Metal) (Earth dams water) Associated w/food
Metal Lesser Yin - (increasing, growing Yin) - energy contracts downward and inward - associated with autumn, middle age, and the Lung and Large Intestine Meridans (Metal melts into or condenses Water) (Metal chops wood)
Shen of the five elements Refers to the creative cycle - Wood fuels Fire - Fire's ashes furnish Earth - Earth condenses and consolidates into Metal - Metal melts into or condenses Water - (Water irrigates Wood)
Mother/Child relationship in Shen Cycle Mother element nourishes or produces child element.
Ko Control Cycle - Necessary to limit the generative power of the Shen Cycle - otherwise there will be unbridled production - Wood pries apart or holds together Earth, Earth channels/blocks water, water extinguishes fire, fire melts metal, metal chops wood.
Cosmological sequence emphasizes the importance of the Water element to our physical well-being through prenatal Qi, the importance of the Earth element to our physical well-being through postnatal Qi, and the importance of the Fire element to our psychological well-being

5 Element Theory Developed by the naturalist school and views body as landscape. Premised on concept of Qi. May not give same diagnostic as Yin Yang Theory. Formulaic in approach to assessment for convenience and expedience, not as accurate or precise as yin yang theory.
Yin yang Theory Developed by the naturalist school and views body as landscape. Premised on concept of Qi. May not give same diagnostic results as 5 Element Theory. More accurate and more precise.
