What happens when the smooth flow of energy in the body is disrupted? When the smooth flow of energy is disrupted, dis-ease or disease ensues.
Can massage therapy in general and Shiatsu in particular be considered electro-magnetic therapy? Why or Why not? Yes: the practitioner's body is an electromagnetic instrument that transmits electromagnetic energy and facilitates the client's own healing power.
3 primary sources of energy in humans parents (prenatal ancestral inheritance) air (postnatal) food (postnatal)
5 basic functions of energy in humans movement, protection, transformation, stabilization & retention, warmth
4 disharmonies of energy in humans deficient Qi, sinking or collapsed Qi, stagnant or excessive Qi, rebellious Qi

transformation conversion of air and food into bodily substances and activities
stabilization & retention preservation of structural integrity
warmth regulation of body temperature
deficient Qi insufficient energy to make tissues and fluids or to propel organ function
sinking or collapsed Qi insufficient energy to support and uphold structures or retain substances
stagnant or excessive Qi congested or blocked energy
rebellious Qi energy that moves in the wrong direction, usually a reversal of the normal energy flow
Jing Essence - roughly equivalent to one's inherited constitution - determines quality & rate of development and aging, procreative ability, & physical robustness.
Dysfunctions of Jing developmental disorders, constitutional infirmities, sexual dysfunctions & procreative disorders, & premature aging.
Shen of Qi Spirit or mind = human psyche - encompasses consciousness, psychological characteristics, and social tendencies. Mental Emotional states affect physical health and vice versa.
Meridians Invisible channels, pathways, or routes of Qi flow. Collectively, they form an energy network that transmits energy to all parts of the body. They do not correspond to a physical structure in the body.
Slow Weak or Blocked Qi can lead to blocked blood flow, nerve condition and vice versa.
How many meridians? 12 main meridians, 2 extra meridians. The 12 main meridians are structured in bilateral pairs that are mirror images of each other.
What are the extra meridians? The Conception and Governing Vessels run along the midline of the torso.
When Qi reaches the end of a meridian where does it go? When Qi reaches the end of a meridian it flows into its paired meridian in one continuous circuit during a 24-hour period.
Conception Vessel influences all Yin Meridians; it acts as an energy reservoir that drains off excess Qi. supplies Qi where there is deficiency, and holds in Qi reserve; it is associated with reproduction.
Governing Vessel influences all Yang Meridians; it acts as an energy reservoir that drains off excess Qi. supplies Qi where there is deficiency, and holds in Qi reserve; it is associated with the brain and spinal cord.
