Laws that have been enacted by many states to protect individuals who attempt to help the victim of an accident, illness or injury by using basic medical or life support treatments such as first aid and CPR The Good Samaritan Law
A closed wound, also known as a contusion Bruise

Minor, with damage to the outer layers of the skin First degree burn
Especially dangerous for children under 5 and for adults over age 50 Burns
May not feel pain due to nerve damage Third degree burn
Treat with cool water and apply ointment if available First degree burn
Seek medical attention For severe burns
What must you do to prevent more serious damage from burns? Move person away from hot or burning objects
Burns damage deeper tissues and may reach all the way to the bone Second and third degree burns
Tissue damage caused by exposure to cold temperature Frostbite
Numbness, tingling or burning sensations, skin may appear waxy Frostbite
What treatment should be used for frostbite? Move person out of the cold. Warm affected areas gently with lukewarm water, never hot water.
What should you never do to a frostbite victim? Do not rub the skin, it can cause further damage
Visible signs include flushed or reddened skin and profuse sweating. The person may also feel weak or nauseated. Heat exhaustion
What treatment should be used for heat exhaustion? Move to a cool area. Offer cool water, but never alcohol or caffiene.
What can heat exhaustion lead to? Heat stroke, a life threatening condition.
The skin is pale and dry, rather than red and moist. The person may be unconscious or incoherent. Seek medical attention immediately. Heat stroke
Thye most severe kind is grand mal Seizures
What must you not do to a person suffering from a seizure? Do not attempt to restrain the person or try to place any objects in the mouth.
What can you do during a seizure to prevent injury or further injury? Move objects that could cause injury out of the immediate are, maintain the airway, check for medical ID tag to see if there are instructions
Chest pain that radiates to the arm or abdomen. May experience difficulty breathing, nausea and vomiting or profuse sweating. Heart Attack
Call 911 immediately when a heart attack is suspected. What first aid needs to be administered? Have victim lie down or recline in a chair, offer cool water, nothing with alcohol or caffiene. If victim is unconscious and has no pulse you may begin CPR if you are trained to do so.
Food obstructs the airway Choking
Victim may not be able to speak or describe their problem. Be alert for gestures indicating distress. Choking
What first aid do you administer for a choking victim? The Heimlich maneuver - compressing, just under the sternum to dislodge the food from the trachea.
What is CPR? Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
What is the process of CPR? Compressions are applied about mid-sternum. rescue breaths can be added if you have a protective barrier and assured that the airway is clear. If you begin CPR, you must continue until EMT/Paramedic arrives to continue treatment.
