What was the goal of the KKK? to use violence, intimidation and voter fraud to keep African Americans from keeping their rights
What were some of the methods the KKK used to regain control of state governments? public lynchings and cross burnings
What was the Compromise of 1877? Democrats agreed to support the election of Hayes in exchange for the removal of troops from the South.
What was the result of the Compromise of 1877? the end of Reconstruction and the end of federal protection of African American rights
What were Jim Crow laws? Southern laws passed after Reconstruction that discriminated against African Americans
How were Jim Crow laws similar to slave codes and Black Codes? They were designed to keep African Americans under control and whites in power
What did some of the Jim Crow laws require? separate facilities for African Americans in schools, housing, theaters, and on trains
What is segregation? separation of the races
What did the Supreme Court decide in the case of Plessy v. Ferguson? Separate facilities were legal as long as they were equal
How were African Americans discriminated against politically? They had to pass a literacy test to vote. They had to pay a poll tax to vote. They could only vote if their grandfathers had voted.
How were African Americans discriminated against socially? They were forced to live and work separately.
How were African Americans discriminated against economically? They weren't allowed to hold many jobs and were the last hired and the first fired.
Were African Americans discriminated against in the North? yes, although there were no Jim Crow laws in the North
