Chapter 1.2 Vocabulary: The Neolithic Revolution

QuestionAnswer
What does the term "Neolithic" mean? New Stone. It refers to the time period when people settled down and formed communities with domesticated animals/crops after the Paleolithic (Old Stone) Age.
What is the significance of the Neolithic Revolution? Mankind was able to form communities once they domesticated animals and grew crops. They didn't have to be nomads anymore!
Why were cities allowed to develop during the Neolithic Age? Populations grew because living in one place with a constant food supply increased the birthrate and people lived longer.
Why did art and religion flourish during the Neolithic Age? It didn't take as many people to see to the nutritional needs of the people. This left a bunch of people with extra time on their hands to question human mortality. This allowed religion to develop...to explain things.
What did the earliest relgions focus on? Reproduction and nature spirits.
Why did the importance of women decrease during the Neolithic Age? Because the men saw to the nutritional needs of the family. Women were expected to take care of the babies and stay at home.
What was the first metal that mankind used? Copper
What metal succeeded copper. Hint: It is a mixture of copper and tin! Bronze
What geographic feature did early man center their civilizations near? Water! Especially river valleys!
What 3 needs did river valleys fulfill? 1. Drinking water2. Food3. Silt deposits left behind after flooding fertilized the crops.
What is a civilization? A complex culture in which a large number of people share common elements.
What form of government did the earliest civilizations use? Absolute Monarchy
Why did religion become popular with the people? It explaned how nature worked and why people existed.
